Meet Sparky!
The vets have estimated his age between 2 and 3 years. He is almost housebroken, I would say. I don't have a doggy door, and I do my best to get the dogs outside regularly, but I'm in a mobile home park where I'm not allowed to walk them, so they only have my enclosed front patio area. I think that with a doggy door and/or regular walks, he will be great! He doesn't soil his crate overnight - he waits til I let him out in the morning. He did do some "marking" when he first got here, so I don't know if that would be an issue at your house. I believe he had just been neutered when he came to me, so he may still have had a lot of hormones in his system.
He has occasionally taken one of my daughters' toys (because they leave them out when I tell them not to!), but he will drop whatever as soon as I scold him. He is very submissive to me. I have provided lots of doggy toys, but none of them seem to interest him yet. I think he would like fluffy and/or squeaky toys, but I don't have that type because I know the dogs won't distinguish between them and my daughters' toys. He loves biscuits and rawhide treats to chew on.
He LOVES cats! By that, I mean that he wants to find them and play with them. I have two - one indoor and one indoor/outdoor. He has learned not to bother my big indoor cat, because he got swatted with claws a few times. For outdoor cats, I would caution that he needs to be firmly held on a leash, so he doesn't slip away to give chase. Any time he has gotten past us at the door here, he goes looking for the cat, and once he finds it, that's all he cares about. He does not have the desire to run away. He doesn't attack the cats at all, just tries to get them to play.
He is small, but a good jumper! We bought an indoor play yard for the dogs, about 3 feet high, and he can easily jump up, catch a toehold, and get right over. So, you would need to make sure your yard is securely fenced higher than that. Again, he only jumps out because he's going looking for one of us or the cat to play with (this is indoors). As soon as I approach him, he knows he's in trouble, and flops right over on his back, showing me his belly. I put him in the crate after that, but so far, he hasn't made the connection!
He loves to run and play "fight" or tussle with our young female (she is full of puppy energy!). He doesn't mind if one of my daughter's picks him up, no snapping or growling or anything. They don't really try to hold him, just carry him for a moment, or lift him into the play yard or crate. He LOVES walks, sniffing around, exploring - he is so alert looking for the cats, he goes into almost a pointer stance - it's adorable!
We have gone to the dog park twice and he really loved that as well. Got along fine with the other dogs after he got over his shyness.
He has gotten attached to me as his "pack leader" and gets very excited when I come out in the morning, just whining and jumping for joy to get attention. Oh yes, he loves belly rubs, and having his head rubbed. He doesn't seem to be much of a lap dog, but that might be different in a different environment, because my min pin won't let anyone else near my lap! He has a sweet disposition and is just a charmer. His little face just melts my heart - he has the cutest little underbite and "puggish" nose, and one ear is always up and one is down. My boyfriend has nicknamed him "Scrappy", which fits him well.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or if I need to clarify anything above. I'm am trying to be clear and honest so you will know what to expect, but please don't think that anything that seems negative above outweighs his positives. I really have mixed feelings about him leaving, because we've all fallen in love with him! But that's part of fostering, and I want him to have the best home possible with all the love and attention he deserves!
