My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Colt he should be ready for adoption in about 10-14 days. He is just a little over a year old. Although he is already a very tall boy is still very puppy like and loves his toys. More to come as I get to know this big lug. Update on our big baby boy Colt: We have gotten to know and love this big guy and now we can fill in his potential forever family. Colt is only 14 months old and a very huge boy. He weighs 137 however for his size should be more like 150-155. We have taken him to the vet and then news wasn't exactly what we like to hear...Colt has bad hips. For now, the course of treatment is medication and laser therapy. Although, at some point in his life he will likely need hip replacement. At the very least he will need FHO surgery. Colt is definitely a candidate, however, right now we are letting him tell us when and if he needs the surgery. A couple of weeks on the medication and a few rounds of laser therapy will give us more to go on. Colt will need a home that is willing and capable to keep up not only is medication, but the laser therapy as well. His forever home should also expect and prepare for additional treatments such as acupuncture, other medications, and eventually surgery. You would never know this guy is in any pain the way he plays. The only thing his foster mom has noticed is on small steps he tends to stumble and trying to get in a tall vehicle he has trouble getting his back legs on the seat. He did not have an upstairs until he came to his foster home and has not attempted them yet nor has he been in a crate since he was really little. However on the stairs he acts like he wants to and the crate he is no longer afraid to go near but has yet to go in. Now onto this guys personality! Colt has meet several other dogs and has done really great on his greetings. He right away wants to play. I don't think he has learned yet to understand warning signals from other dogs. He is very much a playful puppy! He needs lots of toys and attention to keep him busy so he don't get board and get into things. In his previous home he didn't get to meet a lot of strangers but in his foster home he is and he is making great progress on being a social butterfly with strangers too! Colt is no exception (like most Danes) and thinks he is a lap dog! He loves to sit on your lap! Update: Colt is doing very well in his foster home! He has become a social butterfly with strangers. His foster mom has introduced him to so many new people he thinks he should meet them everyday. Colt loves to play and thinks most everything is a game and fun including running off with shoes and toys. We have been working with this and he has shown so much improvement his foster mom is super proud of him. When he first started meeting all the little ones running around he thought for sure they all wanted to play and share toys. He has learned to be much calmer around the little ones however he is still very puppy like and could get excited and knock them down. He seems to be doing well with his medicine and foster mom hasn't seen him stumbling up or down small sets of stairs. His foster mom loves that he takes his medicine like it is a treat. He don't care if its his daily medicine or his monthly preventatives. He also very much loves to go for car rides. He just sits so pretty and calm in the car. No barking or squirming all around. He all around is such a loving boy, full of energy, and love his humans.

UPDATE 8/6/2012

Colt is still waiting on his forever home. He is doing great on his medicine and shows no signs of being in any pain or discomfort. He has now learned how to climb stairs so he would do just fine in a home with an upstairs. He is such a loving guy and wants nothing more than to be loved on and play with his human or other dogs.
