Sweet, gentle, little Marjie (for Marjoram, as the current BDRA name game theme is spices) came to our BDRA foster home in Virginia from the deep south, in Alabama, in August 2012. All we know is that she was brought into the Alabama shelter with another dog.
Marjie was very thin when she arrived into BDRA care but is eating well and gaining some weight! Her coat is very shiny. She had been missing some hair around her rear end (flea allergy) but it has all filled in now. She is beautiful, and looks like a little black fox!
Marjie is a very gentle dog with people and with other animals. She gets along just fine with the 5 dogs at her foster home and ignores the cat. She does bark just before meals but otherwise is quiet. She is becoming a lap dog! When she is being picked up, she gives a little hop to help you out. At a recent local adoption event, a woman was holding Marjie and she said “it is so easy to fall in love with her.”
And Marj is learning about the leash. Sometimes she walks right along and other times she stands still and is not interested in going anywhere. Instead, she likes to stop to smell all the smells!
Marjie is housetrained and crate trained. She sleeps quietly all night in her crate – she settles right in with no complaining.
She has hypermature (very advanced) bilateral cataracts. Sometimes it seems that she might see a tiny bit but most of the time we don’t think she sees anything at all. However, she gets around well in our house with very little bumping into things, and is learning about going up and down the steps that lead from the door to the yard. She doesn’t seem to hear very well but has learned the daily routine and doesn’t let her blindness or hearing loss get in her way of eating, going outside, and hanging out with the other dogs and with us!
And Marjie is in great health! She had anemia when she was first picked up in Alabama but that was due to very poor nutrition. Now her bloodwork is perfect and she just had a dental, so her teeth are in fine shape. The vet said she is about eight years old, so she is only about halfway through her life! Small dogs can easily live to be 15 to 20 years old.
Marjie is looking for her forever home. She would do fine in a home with other dogs and would also be fine being the only dog. Although she hasn’t been around small children yet, we think that she would be fine with small children as long as they are supervised (as small children should be with any dog).
What Marjie really needs is lots of love, good food and a soft bed. She would also enjoy a family that likes to have a little dog in their lap or arms every now and then (or every day!). That’s not too much to ask! Please fill out an application for Marjie today!
