And now, a few words from my foster home: Charley is a very friendly and affectionate little dog. She loves to cuddle and get pettings and belly scratches. She is also very interested in anything that goes on in the kitchen - which may partially explain why she was so overweight when she arrived here. She was so rotund that we honestly thought she may be part Pug!

We have diligently restricted her food intake and do not provide her with any human food at all - with the exception of the occasional baby carrot - with great success: she now looks like a Chihuahua! There is one "before" picture on her bio so you can see how well she has done.

She grew up sharing her owner's meals and generally eating as much as she wanted. This caused her to be significantly overweight and may explain why she protects her food bowl so vehemently. While she has never bitten anyone here, her snarling and snapping can be quite intimidating to the inexperienced Chihuahua owner.

She will also protect toys or her position on the couch, sunbeam or bed.

She has the typical Chihuahua mentality: 90 lbs. of Rottweiler attitude in a 9 lb. Chihuahua body. :-)

A prospective adopter would require some experience dealing with this type of behavior and be strongly committed to working with Charley to help her excellent progression.

Charley is housetrained and crate trained and will gladly curl up on the couch or a chair for hours at a time - preferably inside your sweater. :-)

She adores our 13 year old daughter and often sleeps with her - under the covers of course. Our daughter has taught her to sit, sit up, roll-over and shake-paw as part of her food-aggression rehabilitation.

Charley is very fond of people and will accept strangers very quickly. She doesn't bark a whole lot for a Chihuahua and has minimal exercise requirements, making her suitable for most homes. She should not be placed into a home with small children because of the food/object aggression issue that is now completely under control, but will require ongoing effort, nonetheless.

Before you decide to bring in a furry addition to your family, please take a moment and try to think about your life over the next 10 to 15 years - or even more. Where will you be? Do you have plans to move? Travel? Have kids? Are you able to provide the dog with his or her required exercise demands? Please think very carefully about how this dog will fit into your life as new events may unfold. We want to ensure that this dog’s next home is also its last. If you’ve thought about all of the above and think that you may be the "last stop" we look forward to receiving your application! Please ensure that you submit a fully completed application. Often we receive several applications for the same dog and if you leave out important details then you may be inadvertently eliminating yourself from consideration. Please visit the FAQ section on our website for more details. Thank you so much for considering a rescued dog.

LOYAL Rescue is a foster based rescue with homes located throughout the province and in the United States. We do not operate a shelter, thus do not have viewing hours. Each pet is in a private home. In order to adopt this pet, please visit our website www.loyalrescue.com and fill in our online application. If you have any questions, please email us by clicking here.

Once you submit the online adoption application, we will arrange for a volunteer to contact you to conduct the telephone interview. The same volunteer will also contact your veterinarian and personal references. If the interview and references go well, a home visit will be booked. Should you be the successful applicant for this pet, you are then welcome to come and meet the dog. You are not obligated to adopt if the fit is not correct, however we must go through this process prior to you meeting the dog.

LOYAL Rescue is 100% volunteer run.

Our Adoption Process...
All adoptions REQUIRE an application to be filled out. There is an online application at www.loyalrescue.com. Once you complete the application, we will call you to answer any of your questions and confirm details before proceeding. We then call your vet for a reference, and call each of the three references you list on your application. If all goes well, we visit your home to confirm this is the best possible home for the dog you are applying to adopt. If you are approved, you then fill out a contract, pay an adoption fee (between $300-$400) and adopt the dog. ALL DOGS are up to date on shots, spayed/neutered (unless too old, unhealthy or too young to do), dewormed, defleaed and health checked before going to their new home.
