And now, a few words from my foster home: Charley is a very friendly and affectionate little dog. She loves to cuddle and get pettings and belly scratches. She is also very interested in anything that goes on in the kitchen. You will never find so much as a crumb on the kitchen floor when she is around - which may partially explain why she was so overweight when she arrived here. She was so rotund that we honestly thought she may be part Pug! We have diligently restricted her food intake and do not provide her with any human food at all - with the exception of the occasional baby carrot - with great success: she now looks like a Chihuahua! There is one 'before' picture on her bio so you can see how well she has done.

She grew up sharing her owner's meals and generally eating as much as she wanted. This caused her to be significantly overweight and may explain why she used to protect her food bowl so vehemently. When she arrived she would make quite a commotion towards anyone getting too near her bowl but we have cured her of this habit. She has certainly never bitten anyone here but her snarling and snapping could be quite intimidating to the inexperienced Chihuahua owner. It was basically the typical Chihuahua mentality: 90 lbs. of Rottweiler attitude in a 9 lb. Chihuahua body. :-)
A prospective adopter would ideally have some experience dealing with this type of behaviour to continue Charley down this path and prevent a return of these silly habits.
As rescued dogs go, Charley is a pretty easy keeper. She is house trained and crate trained with no separation anxiety at all. She loves to go in the car and travels very well and also walks very well on a leash. She will gladly curl up on the couch or a chair with you for hours at a time - preferably inside your sweater or under a blanket. Keep in mind that she is very small with very short fur and gets cold easily. She adores our 14-year-old daughter and often sleeps with her (under the covers of course) but will also sleep quietly in her crate. Our daughter has taught her to sit, sit up, roll over and shake paw as part of her food-aggression rehabilitation.
Charley is very fond of people and will usually accept strangers quickly. She doesn't bark a whole lot, for a Chihuahua, and has essentially no exercise requirements, making her suitable for any home without small children. She doesn't seem to like small children, for some reason, but will not bother them as long as they don't bother her. She will eventually warm up to a small child who is calm, quiet and patient.
Charley has been in foster care for a bit too long and could really use a permanent home. She doesn't take up very much space and will reward you with her undying love. :-)

Before you decide to bring in a furry addition to your family, please take a moment and try to think about your life over the next 10 to 15 years - or even more. Where will you be? Do you have plans to move? Travel? Have kids? Are you able to provide the dog with his or her required exercise demands? Please think very carefully about how this dog will fit into your life as new events may unfold. We want to ensure that this dog’s next home is also its last. If you’ve thought about all of the above and think that you may be the 'last stop' we look forward to receiving your application! Please ensure that you submit a fully completed application. Often we receive several applications for the same dog and if you leave out important details then you may be inadvertently eliminating yourself from consideration. Please visit the FAQ section on our website for more details. Thank you so much for considering a rescued dog.

About LOYAL Rescue

About Our Rescue Group...

Although LOYAL Rescue has only been around since 2006, members of LOYAL Rescue have 40+ years of rescue involvement. Through our combined love and dedication to the dogs, we have come together to do what we can to save a life.

Our Adoption Process...

All adoptions REQUIRE an application to be filled out. There is an online application at Once you complete the application, we will call you to answer any of your questions and confirm details before proceeding. We then call your vet for a reference, and call each of the three references you list on your application. If all goes well, we visit your home to confirm this is the best possible home for the dog you are applying to adopt. If you are approved, you then fill out a contract, pay an adoption fee (between $300-$400) and adopt the dog. ALL DOGS are up to date on shots, spayed/neutered (unless too old, unhealthy or too young to do), dewormed, defleaed and health checked before going to their new home.
