My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

“Hi! I’m Rufus
and I’m a love muffin.”

Hi! My name is Rufus. I am just two and a half years old, so I
don’t know much about life. I love it, but it sure is “ruff”. I was
born in a shelter, so I don’t know my parents. I think one of them
was a Lab. Labs are good. They did all the puppy things for me at
the shelter, you know shots and stuff and I got adopted, as did all
my brothers and sisters. But that didn’t last long. My adoptive
family had kids and a couple of other dogs. I was scared and had to
defend myself. I also got a torn ACL somewhere along the line. It
hurt. They didn’t like me anymore, so back to the shelter I went. I
wound up in a barn with, would you believe it, a javelina in the
next pen. The javelina and I did make friends, but I was still wary
of other dogs and something about some people was scary. Because
I was always on the defensive I had to live alone and wasn’t
allowed to play with the other dogs. I have got to tell you, javelinas
are not much fun to talk to or play with. The boss of the shelter said I couldn’t be adopted because
of my behavior. Life was not looking so great. Fortunately, some of the volunteers who feed the
animals and do a lot of other nice things, started to talk to me, play with me, and pet me, and I
liked it, and I liked them. I especially liked pretending to be a lap dog and snuggling. My ACL is
better-just a little limp you can hardly notice. Maybe life won’t be so bad after all.
Then I heard some of my people friends talking. They said the boss didn’t want me there anymore
and I might have to be put down. Oh oh, I don’t know what that means but I could tell from the
way my friends were acting it wasn’t good. Dogs can tell things like that you know. I was trying
to be on my best behavior but I was worried again. Because of the way my friends love animals,
they all had lots of pets and didn’t have room for me. What was going to happen to me?
My friends didn’t give up on me though. You can always count on friends, especially when they are
volunteers. They came up with another plan. They all chipped in money – what ever that is - and
found me a new home at a nice kennel with a play yard and pool and best of all a trainer to help
me learn social skills and get along with others. I hear them talking and the word is I am doing
real well. I even have a girlfriend now and I hope to have some dog buddies soon. It is real nice
here, but it would be nice to find a real home, a forever home, maybe with a soldier just home from
the war. We could help each other. Nice.
Oh no. Another problem. I heard more talking. Seems the money - there’s that word again- is
running out. Without it I can’t stay here and if I can’t stay here it will be the end for me. I don’t
want that to happen. I love life. I am learning to like people, dogs, who knows, maybe even cats
someday. I really need someone that can relate to what I have been through to adopt me. And for
now I would rather not share my new someone with another dog, at least until I learn to live in the
real world. Yep, I think being an only dog would be good so I can work hard to be the kind of dog
everyone will love. I have so much love to give. Don’t let it, or my life go to waste.
Here are some numbers you can call to get that to happen.
