Hello out there....I am Alex! I am a 2-4 yr old super handsome, super adorable, and super loveable Newfoundland/Labrador mix. I arrived as a stray, scared, unsure, and confused. A few days later, I was barking, wagging my tail, and giving out the LOVE! I am a very sensitive type and need a patient sensitive type of family to reassure me life from here on out is safe, stable, predictable, and loving. I have shown myself to get along with other dogs while here at the shelter and also to tolerate cats. Now if a cat should decide to run, I may interpret that as PLAY TIME! Otherwise I walk away, moving on to more interesting things. Since I am so sensitive and can have a bit of a worried look about me, I may pace and pant in my new home initially until I am shown that everything is going to be okay and I can get on a routine. This could take as little as a week or as long as a few weeks or more. It will be an adjustment and rescue animals need time to adjust. I don't want to have to worry about being hit, yelled at, or scolded harshly. I just want to be able have time to adjust and observe at first in my new home. This way I will quickly flourish, come out my little shell, and blossom into what we have seen here at PAWS as an absolutely beautiful boy, who loves to be hugged. loves to lean on you. is very trusting, and will give his whole entire heart and soul.
Alex is a fabulous boy needing structure and routine. He needs regular exercise and positive reinforcement to build his confidence and a home he can be showered with affection as he openly and comfortably receives it once he trusts. He is patient and is eager to please. A real gentle dog.
If you would like to meet with Alex, please contact PAWS Brave Hearts, Calais Maine at 1-207-454-7662 or pawscalais@yahoo.com. Thank you!

Shelter Info...
PAWS Brave Hearts is an all volunteer, no/kill animal care, adoption and education center for homeless companion animals. Most of the animals in our care come to us directly from Animal Control and police officers or through our Trap/Neuter/Adopt/ Return (TNAR) program which includes the care and management of feral colonies. We also assist animals who are about to become homeless due to the loss of a beloved guardian.
In addition to providing transitional care and adoption services, we work with local schools to educate young people about the plight of homeless animals and engage them in many of our organization's activities.
We do this work because we believe that all animals deserve respect and care, including loving, permanent homes.

In addition to weekly walk-in hours, we conduct many community-based adoption events through PAWS Around Town. These events can be found on our web-site www.paws-calais.com.
PAWS Brave Hearts offers a user-friendly adoption process. Our short application is posted on our web-site, under adoption, where it can be downloaded and emailed back to the organization. The application includes references from a 1) veterinarian (for experienced guardians), 2) a landlord (for renters) and 3) individuals who know you. When applications are complete and sent to us via email, they can be processed as quickly as we are able to speak with references.
Our process is designed to find permanent, loving homes for the animals in our care by assessing the adopter's lifestyle and preferences for a companion animal and then find the match they are seeking! We offer the highly regarded ASPCA Meet Your Match assessment to adopters.
We frequently send photos and speak with adopters at length about animals who appear to be ideal companions before they travel to our location for a meet and greet. This process has proven to be very successful for both adopters and their new best friends!
PAWS Brave Hearts serves all of Washington County. Given our close proximity to Canada, both adopters and veterinarians are from the US and Canada.
