Duce's Story...
*****URGENT: DUCE NEEDS TO FIND A HOME ASAP!!!!!!*******

Duce is approximately 1 year old and weighs 48 lbs. Duce will make a good family dog, He knows the "sit" and "shake" commands and will chase a ball but only brings it back part way. Duce likes to get hugs, is gentle and just waiting for an active leader to show him a ton of love and structure. He needs a home that is experienced with active dominant dogs, obedience classes would be a great start. He is active and would be a great running, biking, hiking, walking partner.

Duce was rescued from living a life locked up in a back yard kennel full time. The woman who rescued him had her own dog, but did so with the intention of finding a good home for this young fellow. After 3 months without success in her own social circle, he was brought to us. During that 3 months, Duce lived a much better life, enjoying playing with another dog, interacting with cats, kids and adults. Duce does like to sleep on the bed, and is very quiet in and outside - not a barker, digger or climber. Duce is lucky to be out of the back yard prison and is ready to move on to a home willing to include him as a family member. Duce will do best in a home where he is the only dog and no cats. He is one easy dog to fall in love with!! If you would like to meet Duce, please fill out a statement of interest form at www.alternativehumanesociety.com (under the ADOPT menu).

Mission Statement: The Alternative Humane Society of Whatcom County is an all-volunteer, non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to improving the lives of dogs and cats and helping them find and stay in permanent loving homes.

Our goals are:
• To make Whatcom County a community where no healthy animals are euthanized

• To cultivate respect and awareness for the needs of animals through education
• To advocate for the humane treatment of dogs and cats in all areas of life

Come Meet Our Pets...
We can be found showing off our loveable dogs at Petco on Bakerview and Guide Meridian in Bellingham on the 1st and 2nd weekend of each month. We also hold an adopt-a-thon the third Saturday of every month at Pet Palace, also on the Guide Meridian in Bellingham. All our showings are between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. Come on out and say hi!
Our Adoption Process...
AHS does not do same-day adoptions. We provide a form called a “Statement of Interest” for potential adopters to fill out. When completed, this form is reviewed by an AHS volunteer (the animal’s Case Manager) who will contact the potential adopter with any additional questions and arrange a meeting if it looks like a good match. The potential adopter usually hears back from a volunteer within 2-3 days, but since many of our volunteers also work at full-time jobs, the entire process can take longer. Although we try our very best we usually will not be able to contact every person who submits a Statement of Interest, we reserve our limited resources for those who look like a good match.

Adoption Fees:
Dogs under 18 months – $170
Dogs over 18 months – $145
Senior dogs (older than 8 years) – $95

We Serve the Following Cities, Towns, and/or Counties...
Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden, Custer, Birch Bay, Blaine, Deming, Everson, Sumas, Maple Falls, Kendall, Whatcom County, Skagit County

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Duce, a Bellingham Boxer/Labrador Retriever dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Boxer/Labrador Retriever for sale in Bellingham, or seeking a Boxer/Labrador Retriever dog from a breeder in Bellingham.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Bellingham already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Bellingham breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Boxer/Labrador Retriever breeders who help with Boxer/Labrador Retriever rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Bellingham paves the way for another one to be saved.
