My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 1/19/13!!!

Foster Update: Eliza has been staying with her foster family since mid-December and has come along in leaps and bounds. Her foster mom says she is on the smaller side for a Golden (about 50 pounds) and a beautiful, deep red color. When Eliza first came to SGRR with her litter of puppies, she was not looking her best. She has since put on weight, her coat is shiny, and her eyes sparkle with delight.

Eliza is about 3-4 years old, has a moderate energy level, and likes her toys. She is good in the crate and car. She seems excited to finally be getting some attention and wiggles with delight when her foster mom and dad pet her. After being relegated to being an outside dog in her former home, this bundle of sweetness is relishing every moment of her fosters' affection. When her foster wants her to settle down, she just ignores Eliza for a few moments and she settles. Eliza is still adjusting to being in a new environment that includes 2 resident dogs, Mae and Truman. Her foster has noted that Eliza has been so starved for attention that she does not want to share her foster mom with the dogs and will try to push in between them. As Eliza makes up for lost years of affection and becomes more confident, this attention-hogging should pass. She got along incredibly with Goldie at the clinic though, and the two gals loved to wrestle and play. Still, we will look to place Eliza as an only dog in her new home, but kitty siblings would be just fine.

Eliza has completed her heartworm treatment, has been spayed, fully vetted, and will be ready to travel north to her fur-ever home on January 19. This sweet and gentle girl has been the best mama to her pups and has such a compassionate nature. She is beautiful both inside and outside and she longs to be a cherished and beloved companion. If you are home more often than not and your specialty is showering your furry pal with affection, Eliza could be the dog for you!

Original Bio: In early October, SGRR got a call from a man in Alabama. He told us that his son left his Golden Retriever with him over a year and a half ago and never came back to get her. Since this man and his wife do not like dogs, they kept Eliza outside with little shelter and hardly any food or water. Given the social nature of Goldens, 4 year-old Eliza often escaped from their yard seeking companionship. Well, the day Eliza was supposed to be brought to our rescue, she went missing. She was later found under the porch with a litter of 7 puppies! SGRR took Mama Eliza and her pups to the vet’s where they could receive the proper care they all needed. Because Eliza had received no vet care it was a miracle that she gave birth to a healthy litter of pups, although diminutive in size. A few days later, it was discovered that Eliza was not nourished well enough to produce any milk to feed her offspring, and thus, the pups required bottle-feeding every two hours. It was touch and go for a while, but the pups are doing well now and in foster care awaiting adoption.

Eliza has been a wonderful mommy but it is now Eliza who needs nurturing and proper medical care. She will be going to a foster home soon where she will receive tons of TLC and proper nutrition to put some weight on her frame before being spayed and beginning heartworm treatment.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
