My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted in FL!!!

1/23/13 Update - (See Mae's full story below). Since taking Mae back into rescue she has just been a fabulous dog. Mae went through training and now is living with one of our volunteers. Mae has not shown any fear and has been exposed to many situations. Mae loves to be petted and loves to play. She is good on the lead and follows her leader. Mae takes treats with a soft mouth. You can take anything away from her. If you are an adult who has a quiet household and just wants a wonderful golden to share your life with Mae is that girl.

Original Bio: Hello! My name is Mae and and I am about 6 years-old. If I must say so myself, I am a stunning pure bred Golden gal! When I was about a year old, I somehow got lost and Sunshine Golden Retriever Rescue rescued me from the shelter and found me a new home. For 5 years I was a happy, happy girl! I lived with my dad, mom, and Jen, my doggy sister. Life was good for me, and Jen & I were best buddies.

Everything was great until we found out that Jen had cancer. As the days went on, Jen wanted to play less and less and I would sit by her bedside and watch over her. I kept saying my puppy-prayers for Jen to get better, but she didn’t. My heart was broken when she died. Unfortunately, my mom & dad did not recognize or understand my profound grief and confusion. One day, a stranger was allowed to come into our home when my mom and dad were working. I was very frightened and did the only thing that I instinctually knew to do to defend myself and my home, I bit the intruder. A few weeks later we were having a great time in the nearby park when suddenly a child came up from behind me and grabbed me around my neck. I was startled and nipped the child out of fear. My family didn't understand that I was still feeling the effects of losing my best friend and called SGRR to take me back. My mom and dad put me in situations I was not prepared to cope with and abandoned me when I needed them the most.

But Sunshine understood and gladly took me back. They knew right away that I needed help to get over losing Jen and that I deserved another chance to be loved. Since SGRR came to my rescue, I have been working with a great behaviorist. She has helped me to feel like my old self again and to not be scared anymore!!! I have learned manners and become confident again. I am learning that life can be good again!!!

I would be happiest in a calm, quiet home with adults, and maybe a canine buddy to pal around with. I am a good girl and ask for so little in return – just a warm, dry place to sleep, some food to fill my tummy, a moderate walk to sniff in all the delicious scents that my Golden nose can take in, and love. I hope you'll give me a chance to become your new best friend.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog - make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
