My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Prince is a 5 yr old retriever mix. He came to GRFR as an owner-surrender from Kansas. His previous owner was a disabled person who could no longer take proper care of his pet, so he surrendered Prince to a shelter. Poor Prince was overrun with fleas, had flea dermatitis (a skin condition brought on by flea allergies) and was diagnosed with Heartworm Disease (see more information below). At the shelter, he received a flea dip and is well on his way to healing his skin. He was taken out of the shelter and placed into a foster home in Kansas before being brought to Colorado. His Kansas foster home had other dogs and he got along wonderfully with them. His foster home in Colorado also has dogs AND cats and he gets along fine with both his feline and canine foster siblings. Prince has a very sweet face and he loves to give kisses to his foster parents. Although he weighs a little over 70 lbs., Prince believes he is a lap dog and will not hesitate to sit next to you on the couch and cuddle for all he’s worth! He is an eager eater and he takes his medications without hesitation. Prince loves to go on walks with his 3 other foster siblings, but he does better with a harness since he’s such a strong boy. Prince has only now discovered toys! His favorite “toy” is a butcher bone and he will happily chomp on it for hours on end. Prince is not only house-trained, but he is also crate-trained, which makes keeping him quiet after his treatments rather easy. When his foster parents come home from work, he is allowed out of his crate and he follows them wherever they go. He sleeps all night long on his bed next to his foster mom and will only get up when it’s time to go downstairs to potty and eat breakfast. He is a very mellow boy that would prefer to stay by your side rather than run around the back yard. He loves to ride in the car, especially if he can look out the window and watch the world go by. He behaves at the vet’s office, in spite of being there more often than he, or anyone, would like. He does not know many commands, but his foster parents are working hard at teaching him and making sure he learns how not to counter-surf, which he is very adept at. Although he is a quick learner, he will need someone to continue to train him and teach him proper manners.

Prince has been diagnosed with heartworm disease, but he has already started his heartworm treatment. On Wednesday, January 2nd, Prince received his first shot of immiticide and he will need to have another double shot at the beginning of February. He will be on medical hold until January 11th. The good thing is that GRFR will be able to cover all costs of the heartworm treatment. Because of his treatments, Prince will need to be kept calm and quiet, with no running or playing 60-90 days after the beginning of his treatment. He will then need a follow up blood test in 6 months at one of our GRFR approved vets at GRFR's expense. Our Vet Coordinators will work with his adoptive family. Prince's forever family also will need to be sure he takes a monthly heartworm preventative tablet year round. Some people might be leery of a dog like Prince who has had heartworm, but there is no need to be. It is both curable and preventable. Prince’s current foster mom adopted a GRFR dog who came in with heartworm disease and her dog is now free and clear of heartworms. She is more than willing to talk to you about the treatment and her experiences with a heartworm positive dog!
