Nick's Story...
Nick is an 18 year old blue front amazon. He has always lived with retired couples. His first home was for 17 years and second was for one. Both homes eventually had pulmonary problems and were advised to have a parrot-free home.

Nick is not especially friendly - he will not step up and if you come too close to him he will lunge. He is stick trained however so you can move him from location to location. If he accidentally falls to the floor he will allow you to pick him up to go back on his play stand. We would characterize Nick as a bit of a perch potato. He is content to sit on top of his cage or on a play stand for most of the day. His original owners were able to walk around outside with Nick on their shoulders but that did not work for the second owners.

Nick is at the louder end of the spectrum for amazons which are already among the louder parrots. He is quiet at night with the lights off but starts calling as soon as lights are on in the morning and does so fairly persistently throughout the day. He would definitely not be appropriate for an apartment as his voice carries.

Nick is easily bullied by other parrots having grown up with only humans. He does not know how to protect himself from cats, dogs or other, even small, parrots which might fly onto his cage.

He says "Good Morning" "cookie" and "are you OK?" - the noise he makes most often is a repetitive "hop, hop, hop, hop" call which is, frankly, rather irritating. As Nick doesn't do anything other than sit it is important that his adopter be willing to keep him in a fairly high traffic area so that he is able to interact.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Nick, a East Greenbush Amazon was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Amazon for sale in East Greenbush, or seeking a Amazon from a breeder in East Greenbush.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in East Greenbush already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a East Greenbush breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Amazon breeders who help with Amazon rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in East Greenbush paves the way for another one to be saved.
