Meet Ruxpin.

Ruxpin is nothing if not unusual! He was part of a pack of stray dogs living at a vacant house in Louisiana. We cannot be sure, but think he may be part Shepherd, part Heeler and maybe part Lab. He is only about a year old and weighs about 40 pounds, as of 12/15/12.

Ruxpin was obviously never handled during his early months and was feral when caught. He has been making progress but still avoids human contact if at all possible. If leashed, he will tolerate petting and has never tried to bite, but as soon as the leash is off he quickly retreats to at least 4 feet away.
Ruxpin does get along great with other large dogs although he shows some aggression towards small dogs and will need further evaluation in that area as well as with cats.

Ruxpin has been vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He was light positive for heartworms and will start treatment next week (12/26/12). Healthwise, he should be cleared to travel by mid-January but we will need to evaluate his progress on socialization and may need another month or so of foster care before he is ready for adoption.

Thank you for your interest in Ruxpin. This boy deserves to be loved and have his own forever home.

Donation: $450.00 (includes $140.00 transport fee paid directly to USDA approved transport company where applicable).

Interested in adopting this fantastic canine? Please visit our website and complete an online application – we respond much quicker to applications than to emails as we receive a voluminous amount of email each day and it’s impossible to respond to all of them in a timely manner even though we try.

Application: http://www.pawsnewengland.com/adoption-form/

An application does not mean you are required to adopt – it just lets us know you are seriously considering this dog for adoption.

PET INSURANCE: Paws New England as recently joined VCA Animal Hospitals in a program providing new adopters with a certificate for an initial health exam at a VCA Hospital and treatment of certain conditions free of charges for the first 5 days. This is a great program and PAWS is thrilled to be participating in for our adopter. There are also numerous other pet insurance programs available to shelter animals.

QUARANTINE: Paws New England participates and abides by the quarantine rules and regulations set forth in the states of MA, CT, RI.

UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED, ALL OF OUR DOGS ARE LOCATED OUTSIDE OF RHODE ISLAND BOARDED EITHER PRIVATE FOSTER HOMES OR TRAINING FACILITIES. If a dog is listed as "local", he /she is at one of our foster homes in New England.

We are often asked, "Why would you charge 'so much' for a rescue pet? Why not just place it in a good home?" The answer is because we need adopters who are willing to support ALL rescue pets, not just the dog they adopt. A young, healthy dog might cost us $150-400 in discounted vet care, and many people will want to adopt it; an older dog with health issues can easily cost $500-1500 in veterinary expenses, and it may require months of foster care for rehabilitation yet we can only ask a minimal adoption fee, and it may be a long time until anyone comes forward to adopt him/her. Fees from the younger, more adoptable dogs help offset the cost of caring for the others.

About Our Rescue Group...
PAWS is comprised of a small group of volunteers from New England and Tennessee trying to reduce the euthanization rate (previously 90%) at the Tipton County Animal Control shelter in Brighton, Tennessee. This shelter is forced to euthanize thousands of animals each year due to irresponsible pet owners that do not spay/ neuter their dogs in the area. Millions of dogs in America are euthanized each year due to lack of space and lack of funding to try and find them better homes.

Our mission is to save as many animals as possible, removing them from the shelter, having their veterinary needs met prior to traveling and then finding them loving homes throughout New England. We do this only with the assistance of many people volunteering their time by going to the shelter, transporting the dogs to the vet, fostering dogs who need special care, and arranging for their new and happy homes in this area. Most importantly, we cannot do any of this without those people willing to open their homes and hearts to these lovely creatures.

Come Meet Our Pets...
All of our dogs are located either in foster homes in New England or Tennessee/Missouri. Please email our volunteers to ask about the specific pet that you are interested in.
