My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Mika, which means "beautiful fragrance" in Japanese, is a 6 year old pure bred Red female Shiba Inu that we pulled from a puppy mill auction in November. Before coming into rescue she had never been on grass, never worn a harness or walked on a leash, never been inside of a house. While still very shy with people, she has made some substantial progress and we feel that she deserves to continue her journey in a forever home.

Mika does not yet interact with people and would prefer a quiet home that will allow her to come out of her shell in her own time. Children make her nervous so no kids please. She is great with other dogs and is learning to run around the backyard in her foster home and play. Her foster parents have seen her pick up a ball and carry it around for a few minutes, which is a very exciting step for a dog raised in a cage to produce puppies. We would ask that there be another well rounded, friendly, but not super hyper, dog in the house that can be her companion and show her the ropes. She is also good with cats.

Mika is potty trained and crate trained. She enjoys having a crate as a safe residence to escape to when she is nervous and spends a good deal of time in her crate even when her foster parents are home because she is still nervous of people. After being in her foster home for 6 weeks she is slowly starting to come out into the living room and lay on a dog bed when her foster parents are in the same or nearby room. Mika is fed in her crate to give it a positive association and crated with the door closed both at night and when her foster parents are not home.

Mika does however perk up on walks and when outside in her backyard so we would prefer a home that does have a fenced in back yard that will also take her for daily strolls. She does fine with chain link fencing and makes no attempts to escape.

We understand that adopting a dog like Mika is more of a selfless act, as her interactions with people are few and far between, but we are sure the right person is out there. Recommended reading for Mika would be Help for Your Fearful Dog by Nicole Wilde.

Mika's adoption fee is $275.00 which includes her spay, surgical dental, microchip, deworming, distemper and rabies vaccination and a professional training course or private session with the Director, depending on where Mika is at in her social skills at the time of the adoption.
