My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Betty is a tall drink of water (15”) with beautiful legs and an hourglass figure. She is approximately six years old and in terrific condition. Betty has a spectacular personality, is very loving and affectionate, and anyone would be fortunate to have her join their family.

Betty loves meeting new people, including children. She was handled by kids of all ages for a few hours at the recent adoption Expo and enjoyed every minute of it. As far as cats go, Betty mostly ignores the resident 17 year old other than an occasional sniff. It took a while for Betty and the two resident Beagle sisters to play nicely together, but now everyone knows their place and they are a well behaved pack.

She has a beautiful deep, husky voice that she uses to order her food and announce your arrival, but is not “barky.” Her voice makes her a less than ideal apartment dweller. Quite the talker, Betty moans when you rub her belly and ears, when she’s settling in for the night, and sometimes in her sleep. Oh, and she loves to be kissed, or at least she puts up with it very well.

Betty walks well on a leash, except it’s really more of a very long sniffing expedition. She is not “leash reactive”, making our walks very enjoyable. Most Beagles aren’t “jogging buddies,” meaning you might be off in a different direction that you originally planned before you know it. She really enjoys the freedom of the big fenced back yard where she can run like crazy and chase the squirrels. Like all Beagles, Betty can never be off-leash unless she is contained by a well maintained fence. I have not tried her on a tie-out but I would never leave her unattended on one. One or two leash walks per day would make her very happy.

Her housetraining is complete unless I don’t pay attention to her signals. It’s mostly about my knowing when she “should” go out and then convincing her to do it. She does go out willingly with her foster sisters.

Betty says, “I eat good kibble but I need extra fiber, otherwise my bottom starts to bother me. Mom doesn’t give us “regular doggie treats;” instead we get raw carrots, raw sugar snap peas, apple slices, pureed pumpkin, and roasted sweet potatoes. Mom thinks it is funny to watch us eat a piece of banana because we make a face but eat it anyway. I get a probiotic capsule every day. I have a special Dog Pause bowl that helps me eat slower and Mom said I can take that with me to my forever home.

I stay in my crate when Mom leaves, because a couple of times I redecorated the entire kitchen while she was gone. She says I must have opposable thumbs because I can open the cabinet where the trash is hidden. But I get to sleep outside the crate at night and I do just fine. I am happiest sleeping next to Mom.

I know my name and “Off” and “Sit” but I sure would like to go to school to learn more. Mom says I would be an awesome therapy dog because everyone loves me and I am so calm”.<
