My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Snoopy is a handsome, charming young Beagle that has never had the luxury of living in a home and being loved. He needs a special family that will be patient and allow him to come around at his own pace. He has a very endearing personality and is the sweetest dog. With some time and opportunities to overcome his meagre beginnings he will make a wonderful family companion. Snoopy is approximately 1 1/2 years old and weighs 29 lbs.

Here is what else his foster family had to say:

Snoopy is a very handsome boy featuring luxurious, silky ears for petting and a freckly wee inquisitive snout. He is attractively marked and sheds very little. He is generally very quiet and aside from when he is in his crate we have heard very little from him at all – I have only heard him actually bark twice since being in our care!

Snoopy can be defined as the silver lining in my day. He greets us with such enthusiasm with his wild wiggling, tail-a-flutter, rolling around on his back inviting his morning tummy rub. Getting out of bed has never been met with such explosive excitement at our house!

It has been a pleasure watching him transform into a more brave and confident boy as he slowly but surely comes out of his shell. Each day is a new adventure for him as he adds new experiences to his repertoire and finds the confidence to boldly go where Snoopy has never gone before. Now that he realizes that he is in a safe place where he can express himself and explore, his little personality is beginning to blossom.

He is learning to trust the people and things around him. He proceeds with caution and can be a bit jumpy, but that doesn’t stop him from being tenacious…if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again…very fitting phrase for this sweet little man.

Snoopy likes to play quietly with his toys rather than engaging in play with the rest of our critter clan, mostly because play time at our house can be a bit rowdy! He watches intently, but would rather chew on his bone or tug at his stuffed bear in a quiet place undisturbed by the rest of the beasts. That said, he does love the animals in our house, especially our Ginger. Although he doesn’t engage as much in play time with the rest of the family, he tries his very best to get Ginger to run and play with him, leaping and bounding around her trying to encourage her to join in his game. At the dog park the two of them run around chasing each other like the best of friends.

He loves to eat! He has found his appetite and is enjoying partaking in the doggie dinner ritual at our house. He enjoys his kibble which is available for nibbling throughout the day. At dinner hour, he enjoys a scoop of either canned food or something created by myself (the canine chef) without difficulty – he is not a particularly fussy eater! He loves Dentastix and liver treats the best!

Although he has bonded with our family, he is not a snuggly dog with his people so far. He likes to be nearby or on the couch, but doesn’t need to be (or really want to be) snuggled close or touching you. He enjoys lying beside us and being petted, but would rather be given his space…that is, unless it is by our dog Ginger…that is a different story. He loves her canine companionship.

Snoopy has relatively good house manners. He has no food aggression issues and I can freely put my hands near his mouth and bowl when he dines. He did not know any commands from what we could tell upon his arrival, but we are working on teaching him to “sit”. He has ample opportunity to go outside and uses those times appropriately; however, he does not really ask to go outside and we are trying very hard to watch for behavioural cues such as circling and sniffing. He will need continued patience and support in this area until he completely catches on, but he is well on his way to being house broken. Snoopy is crate trained and spends 2-3 days per week crated while my husband and I are working for approximately 8 hours. He makes a bit of a raucous when I first leave in the morning, but does settle down. Snoopy walks well on his leash. He generally walks beside or behind me following my lead quite well.

Although he has become much more comfortable with his foster family, he needs time and patience when meeting new people. He is hand shy, and will scurry off to a place he feels safe or will hide behind me when we encounter people on our walks. He is curious about people and will observe them from a far, but is still quite fearful on initial contact. Our home is a multi-pet home having 4 cats and 2 dogs. Snoopy is well behaved with all of them. He interacts well with our dogs, especially our female dog Ginger, and although fascinated by the entertainment provided by our cats, he doesn’t really bother with them.

He is startled by anything new such as unfamiliar or loud noises, cars, people and even the toys that made noise in the house (although he is now enjoying making them squeak!). Generally, he needs time to warm up to new experiences of all kinds.

Snoopy deserves to have a wonderful home with patient, caring people. He is well on his way to being a much more confident pup and just needs that kind someone with strong leadership skills to show him the way. I think that he would do best in a home that has another canine friend for him to bond and be friends with as he is at his best when in the company of another confident canine to set the example.

If you would like to make this wonderful little dog part of your family, please submit an application for consideration.
