My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 2/23/13!!!

After careful observation, we have learned that Merri and Honey are not attached to each other as we first thought. Each wants to be the center of attention, so we are making their wishes come true! Merri and Honey each have a home ready for them, and they are Adoption Pending to separate homes in New England. We thank everyone who inquired about the girls and offered to help them!
_______________

Honey and Merri are beautiful AKC-registered Golden Retriever sisters. They were purchased as puppies 7 years ago by a family in Florida and have lived happily with them. The family's sons have moved on to college, leaving Honey and Merri with too much time alone. They have been bored and tried escaping their back yard by climbing their chain-link backyard fence. Consequently, they have been spending much of their day alone in the family's mud room. The family realizes these sweet sisters deserve a much better life, so they contacted Sunshine to find them a home where they can stay together and have the good life and attention they used to know.

Honey and Merri are active and love to play outside. True to their breed, they adore humans and want to be with their people all the time. One of their favorite things was helping their human Dad with yard work.

We have good news from our vet that Merri and Honey are both Heartworm negative and will be spayed before they go to their forever home. Both girls are about 60 lbs. of beauty, with lovely golden coats. Merri is the very light girl and Honey is a bit darker. Both are moderate energy and both are strong on a leash (they don't seem to have had much training in that area). The girls ignore cats and are ok in the car. There is not a mean bone in either of their pretty bodies.

It is the way in which the girls are different that breaks our hearts. While Merri is confident, outgoing and secure, and seems to like everything except a much-dreaded crate, Honey is entirely different. It is very obvious that poor Honey has been abused. Someone has raised a hand to her and she gets frightened. When you reach out to pet her, she hits the ground. Then, she will slowly relax and will sit to be petted.

Because of this sad history, we are searching for a home where the girls can stay together, and where Honey will receive much patience and kindness and love. With time we know Honey can build her confidence and learn she will know only kindness from now on. We will be taking videos of both Merri and Honey shortly so please watch for them. And if you feel you can give Merri and Honey a loving home where they both will feel secure and special, and if you have the patience to help Honey become happy and confident, please apply for them. They are sweet and beautiful diamonds in the rough.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
