My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi there, my name is Dewey and I am a rolly-polly adorable hunk of a boy. Well, not so rolly-polly anymore. Yes, I was a bit (OK a lot) overweight, but my foster mom has been taking me out for walks everyday with another speedy little Mal girl and I'm down to a respectable 85 lbs! That is quite an accomplishment since I weighed around 120 when I was first rescued. My story is a sad one so you might want to grab a hanky. You see, I was so badly neglected and over-fed (yes, that was a problem!) that I was in pretty rough shape. My tormenter dumped me at the shelter because it no longer wanted to deal with the problems it created for me through that neglect and abuse. I was in such a bad way that the shelter was going to (gulp!) put me down because they felt I was too old and sick to ever find a home. But I had one thing going for me, a guardian angel masquerading as an animal control officer. She told Moonsong about my plight and volunteers swooped in and got me to a vet. It turned out I had a bladder infection, I was 40 pounds overweight and my toe-nails had been allowed to get so long they curled back into my pads so that I couldn't walk anymore. The vet said they were the longest nails she'd ever seen on a dog! Since I couldn't walk, I couldn't relieve myself properly and that was probably what led to the bladder infection and a secondary skin infection. The vet also cleaned my teeth and discovered I am younger than everyone originally thought!

Since then, a course of antibiotics has cleared the infections up and now that my nails have been trimmed, and I've been in boot camp for a few months, I can run and play with my foster mom and the other girl Mal I get to hang out with. Check out my videos! I'm on a special home prepared diet to help rid me of some kidney/bladder stones. With my weigh loss and healthy diet, I feel a lot more energetic. My skin condition has completely cleared up and my coat is gorgeous. I really look forward to the daily walks in the neighborhood now and can go further each day. Yes, my cute little personality is really starting to shine through all the pain and discomfort I've experienced. But now that I'm feeling better, I think that I would like to find a permanent home. I like other dogs but don't necessarily need to have one around to be happy. I have seen cats in the neighborhood and they looked like something I'd like to chase, so I would probably be best in a home without them. I'm also pretty quiet except around meal or walk time! Then I'm quite the talker. So if you are looking for a mellow fellow who's happy just to hang out and be with you, I'm your guy but you have to promise not to ever let me get that fat again cause I plan on winning "The Biggest Loser"!

Love, Dewey.

P.S. I've been told my head shape and beautiful but unusual markings may indicate that I come from an old working line of sled dogs - cool huh?
