My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hi Friends!

My name is Diesel, but they’re calling me “Diesel 2” here at IEBR because apparently there is already another Diesel in the rescue right now. I guess Diesel is a popular name for a bulldog! My foster family also calls me “Big D” because I’m kind of a big oaf! I weigh about 60# but am working on putting on a little weight. I’m 5 ½ years old, and for me, my LIFE is just beginning!

I’m really happy to be with IEBR because I’m finally getting the care I need and deserve. I’ve got some health problems that have been very painful for a long time. IEBR is doing all they can to help me, though, which I am very grateful for.

Let me tell you a bit about my medical status first. My biggest problem at the moment is my ears. My canals are calcified completely shut from chronic, untreated ear infections. I am essentially deaf. When I first came into rescue, I could not hear ANYTHING, even loud noises and whistles. Now, however, I am hearing a tiny bit. Yay!

The biggest problem with my ears being calcified shut is not the deafness, however. In fact, I am okay living without the ability to hear. The problem is that it is affecting my balance and coordination, as well as causing me a great deal of discomfort/pain. I am very clumsy and move like I am drunk. I stumble a lot and fall into walls, etc. Stairs are difficult for me because of this issue. I’m also hesitant to move as much as I’d like to (to play and do other fun things) because of my balance and coordination. I am getting medication put into my ears, although my foster mom can’t get it into the canals like she is supposed to because they are closed shut. She gets it in as far as she can though. I’m also on oral steroids and antibiotics to help my ears. I think all this treatment is working, because like I said – I can hear a little bit now! My foster mom says they are looking better too - a lot less inflamed and swollen.

The vet says my ears are only going to get worse because they were neglected for so long, unless we do surgery on them to remove the calcifications/bone that has developed in the canals. This is a major and risky surgery, so I’m hoping for the best. We are looking into a special packing for them first to see if that will do the trick instead of surgery. So we’ll see. Surgery is, unfortunately, likely.

I also have bilateral entropion, so I need that surgery as well. Right now I’m getting some ointment put in my eyes every day to make them feel better. My foster mom and dad think my eyesight is limited somewhat by the scarring on my corneas from the entropion, but I do okay. I also need to be neutered.

Now for the most important stuff – my winning personality. I am a very, very laid-back, docile, gentle (but clumsy), slow, stubborn, bull-headed, and tolerant guy. Like I already mentioned, I am a bit of an oaf. My foster mom says I’m kind of like an awkward teenager. I am harmless, and the sweetest, most even-keeled boy you’ll ever meet. The only thing that gets me excited is mealtime and water. That’s right, I LOVE WATER. I do a dance when my mom is filling up the water bowl. I like it so much that she has to ration how much I get because otherwise I will drink myself silly!

I’m a quiet guy. Once in a while I will let out a little bark or two, but no one knows why I do it. It’s random. I just like to keep them wondering, I guess!

I was very flat and disinterested in people and other dogs when I first came into rescue. I have to admit, I was depressed. My world had been turned upside down and I was feeling miserable because of my ears and everything. I’m really making progress now, though. I even cuddle with my foster mom sometimes! I have ventured up onto the couch some too, which is fun! Who knew it was so soft and comfy up there. I stay there for a little while and then get back off. I am learning to be a love bug. It’s obvious that I WANT to snuggle and trust my foster parents completely, but it takes some time to build up the confidence and courage. I fell asleep with my head on my foster mom’s lap for the first time a couple of nights ago. She was so excited (easy to please, I guess!)! I’ve come so far. I am a lover boy and it’s coming out more and more each day. I love to follow my foster parents around the house like a shadow. I lay in the kitchen and watch them make dinner and I even want to be in the bathroom with them whenever they go in there. I like people a lot.

My foster mom and dad just love me and I love them too. I wouldn’t hurt a fly. I have several foster brothers and a foster sister, and I get along perfectly with all of them. I am just a really easy to get along with kind of guy. I used to live with a cat and we cuddled and were good buddies, so I’d be fine in a home with a cat. I even had chinchillas in my last home and I liked them too!

I am doing quite well with my housetraining. My foster mom is so proud of me!!! When I first came into rescue a few weeks ago, I was urinating frequently, no matter whether I was inside or outside. Lately, however, my foster mom is able to leave my belly band (male diaper) off when she’s home and I haven’t had a single accident! I still wear my belly band at night and when my foster parents are gone, and I do still have occasional accidents during those times. Some days, though, I don’t have any problems at all. Recently, I went about 5 days straight without a single accident! I was feeling pretty proud of myself. I never have #2 accidents inside, only #1. I’m trying so hard and it’s paying off, because I’m doing so much better with it.

Please consider adding me to your family. I am here waiting for your applications. I deserve a great home and a family that will love me forever. I am the sweetest boy and so lovable – just ask my foster mom and dad. They’re head over heels in love. I look forward to hearing from you! In the meantime, I am doing great here in my foster home and continuing to address my medical problems. Thank you for reading about me!

LOVE!!!
