My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Jack is estimated at 6 - 7 yo, and is a black and white male with a tail, rescued from the side of the road in NC as a stray. He should have been named Lazarus. My neighbor swears he has returned from the dead. When found, he was the dirtiest, smelliest, thinness dog you could imagine. His coat looked like a bad dye job with tuffs of orange, was so matted it was in dreadlocks, and so was dry it was falling out on its own. It all had to be shaved off. He had ear infections and heartworms. He was so skinny you could count every bone.

Today, the ear infections are gone and his coat is coming back a glossy, soft black with white chest and toes. He has gained much needed weight and his bones are no longer in high relief. He has been neutered and is half way through his heartworm treatments with no real adverse effects.

He has learned about dog beds and toys. He has two favorite squeeky toys that he carries around like security blankets. He is so fascinated with the refrigerator and its seemingly endless supply of food, that he leaves his toys in front of it as offerings to the food god. His head is always next to mine whenever the door is opened.

He gets along with my two female aussies. He is housebroken and knows basic commands like sit, down, wait, and leave the toys inside before going on a walk. He hasn’t been taught to heel yet, but walks quietly next to you without straining on the leash. He is gentle with children and leaves cats alone for the most part. He loves walks and rides in the car. He doesn’t like being left alone, but we’re working on that.

But the real miracle of Jack is not his physical transformation or even how seamlessly he has fit into the family routine. The real miracle is how happy he is and has been throughout his stay. His tail is always wagging. It wagged the night I found him on a North Carolina road, and even when Animal Control took him away. It wagged the first night I had him when I gave him a bath before letting him in the house. It wags when pills were put down his throat, when he was neutered and when he came home from his first heartworm treatment. No matter what befalls this guy, it doesn’t seem to affect his happy disposition. He will be available for adoption around the 1st of December.

He is being fostered on Amelia Island, FL 8/11/07
