Sweet Sadie Mae's Story...
Maybe you are like most people. Maybe you'd love to have a dog but are afraid of the drama that can come with it. Maybe you don't have hours to spend meeting a high energy dog's exercise needs. Maybe you enjoy walking, but don't enjoy a dog who pulls like a sled dog on the end of the leash. Or maybe you have kids and don't want them bowled over by an exuberant puppy. Meet Sadie. She is the sweetest, most gentle dog you could ever hope to meet. She is grateful for every comfort offered to her and is content just to know she's safe and has a place to belong. Sweet Sadie rarely barks, and gets along great with other dogs. We are convinced that Sadie is an angel in disguise. If you'd like to meet her, please fill out an online app at bhs.va.org and her foster mom will contact you to meet her.

About Our Rescue Group...
The Bedford Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1994 and dedicated to eliminating the overpopulation of cats and dogs in Bedford County through education, spay/neuter programs, and companion animal adoptions. We are NOT the tax-funded Bedford County shelter on Falling Creek Road, although we do try to help the animals there whenever possible. Our adoptable pets live in volunteer foster homes where they receive the care and attention they deserve while awaiting a permanent home.

Our various programs for Bedford County and City of Bedford residents include::

•A low cost spay/neuter program for area pets
•The construction of a no kill animal shelter, The Vernon D Lybolt Adoption Center, at 829 Ole Turnpike Road in Bedford.
•Find homes for abandoned and homeless animals through our adoption and transport programs.
•Help pet owners with unexpected expenses involving their pets, through our Emergency Fund program.
•Provide humane traps and spay/neuter subsidies for feral cats through our Forgotten Felines program.
•Humane Education program for area Scout troops and schools.

Come Meet Our Pets...
Until we are able to build our No-Kill Shelter, our adoptable pets live in foster homes throughout Bedford County and surrounding areas. If you are interested in meeting a pet, please submit an adoption application or contact our main office.

We also hold monthly adoption events at our Headquarters and the Bedford Tractor Supply. Visit our website or our Facebook page for dates and times. If you would like to be added to our monthly events email list, please send a request to info@bhsva.org.

Our Adoption Process...
Have you discovered a pet you wish to adopt? Great!

Now, the first step is to complete an adoption application on our website at http://bhsva.org/adoptions-home.htm. This is not a commitment to adopt. It is simply the first step in the process.

We will review your application for preliminary approval before asking the foster parent to contact you to set up a time to meet the pet. You may also have concerns about how the animal will fit your home environment. When the foster parent contacts you, you will be able to discuss your concerns with someone who has first-hand experience with the pet.

After you meet the animal, you and the foster parent can decide if this is definitely the forever pet for you.

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Sweet Sadie Mae, a Bedford Boxer/American Pit Bull Terrier dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Boxer/American Pit Bull Terrier for sale in Bedford, or seeking a Boxer/American Pit Bull Terrier dog from a breeder in Bedford.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Bedford already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Bedford breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Boxer/American Pit Bull Terrier breeders who help with Boxer/American Pit Bull Terrier rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Bedford paves the way for another one to be saved.
