My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 3/22/13!!!

Maya is a 14 month old pure bred Golden girl who was purchased from an Amish puppy mill in PA. She has been with her original family since she was a pup. While her family loves Maya, they have come to the realization that they do not have the time to spend with Maya that she so needs and deserves. With the family busy with work, school, and activities, Maya spends her days in a crate. She only gets to spend a short time outside the crate each day and this is just not enough stimulation, neither physical nor mental, for a young dog.

One of SGRR’s volunteers visited with Maya and told us what a sweet and loving dog Maya is. She craves affection and attention and was observed putting her paw on her 10 year old human over and over, just begging for attention. Many people do not realize that adopting a Golden Retriever is almost like adding another child to the family with regard to the amount of inclusion Goldens crave. Maya is wonderful with the family’s 3 young children and has enjoyed the company of her canine cousin. She is gentle taking treats from our volunteer and our volunteer was able to put her fingers in Maya’s mouth and touch her pearly white teeth. She loves toys but will chew them up into many pieces so we recommend more durable toys such as Nylabones and similar sturdier toys for her.

When Maya was about 8 months old, the family went on vacation and she stayed with her human uncle and his dog. She became very depressed and experienced separation anxiety. Teaching a dog to associate the owner’s departure with a reward, like a delicious stuffed Kong or other food-dispensing toy, can help resolve the problem with a positive association, as well as distract your dog for the first few minutes you’re gone. Providing a young dog like Maya with enough exercise is also a key to a contented dog. So if you are looking for a walking or running buddy, this girl is sure to be at your side. Maya's first family told us that Maya loves to swim in their built-in pool and loves to fetch sticks, balls, and even wiffle ball bats.

Maya is a beautiful, highly trainable, and smart Golden who will flourish with an owner who can give her the guidance, training, and leadership she so needs. She will blossom into a wonderful companion when she knows what her human wants of her. We can only consider applications for Maya from folks who are home most of the day. If you have lots of love and time to dedicate to helping Maya learn the ropes, she will repay you with a lifetime of devotion! But don‘t wait - a gorgeous gal like this is not going to last long!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
