My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Megumi (may-goo-mee), which means "blessing" in Japanese, is a 6 year old pure bred female Akita that our rescue pulled at a puppy mill auction in Missouri in February. Before coming to rescue, Megumi had never once lived in a house, walked on grass, worn a collar or leash, gone for a walk, been petted by people or done anything our canine companions do on a regular basis. Puppy mills are large scale USDA licensed breeders that sell puppies via the internet or to pet stores. The dogs' sole purpose is to produce puppies. The adults are given extremely minimal care and are left in cages their entire lives, just shelling out puppies. These dogs come to us usually extremely shy and fearful of human touch and are easily startled by everyday noises, movements and interactions. Many have a hard time adjusting to walking on a leash because they panick when the collar or harness gets slightly tight on their bodies since they've never worn such things before. These dogs take patience and understanding to come out of their shells and some may never be what one would consider a "normal" dog.

Megumi in particular is doing very well in her foster home. She is doing well with crate training and potty training. She loves her walks and may even do well in an apartment setting. She is slowly warming up to her foster mom and dad. She does let out little alarm barks when she sees strangers or children when out on walks so a home without younger children may be best.

Megumi does great with other dogs and is learning to play with them and with toys. She especially loves and follows a male Shiba, Michi, that was pulled from the same auction. She loves going for walks with him and the two will lean in towards one another on the walk. If walked for a ways separately and then brought back together, they will do little butt bumps into one another. If possible we would love to see them adopted together.

Suggested reading for Megumi would be Cautious Canine by Dr. Patricia McConnell, Help for Your Fearful Dog by Nicole Wilde, and How to Behave so Your Dog Behaves by Dr. Sophia Yin.

Megumi's adoption fee is $275.00 which will include her spay, microchip, deworming, distemper and rabies vaccinations and a 6 week professional training course. Megumi also had a couple of lumps biopsied and checked out by CSU and they were benign.

If somone would like to adopt BOTH Megumi and Michi, their combined adoption fee would be $375.00.
