My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Read more about me here!

Who doesn't love a good listener? Is there anything more gratifying than having a friend who hangs on your every word and is more interested in hearing you speak than in chattering of themselves? Of course not, and that's why Jake is the perfect companion. When he hears his name, his ears perk up, his tail wags and he does his “happy” prance. His idea of heaven is to spend hours lying with his head in your lap, just listening to the sound of your voice.

Jake came to MWCR from a shelter in South Dakota after he was picked up as a stray. Although we don't know his history, the vet believes that he had probably been hit by a car early in his life and not given proper veterinary care. The damaged foot and dislocated rear leg were allowed to heal on their own, and by the time he came to us, he was experiencing significant hip pain. On February 8, he underwent surgery and has been recovering at his foster home. He will need a few more weeks before he is fully healed, and in the meantime, he needs short frequent walks and a little help getting in and out of the car. He will also have to watch his weight, since extra pounds will put stress on his old injuries.

Jake is a good boy who is fully house trained and can be left alone for extended periods without being destructive. He does have some separation anxiety, however, and will bark when alone in the house. This means that a townhouse or condo would not be a good choice for his forever home. His foster mom says that his only misbehavior came when the family brought in a real Christmas tree and Jake did what dogs do to trees – a perfectly logical mistake!

Jake enjoys grooming and loves going for rides in the car. He also likes to go for walks and is well behaved on his leash. He knows the basic commands, though his injured hip makes “sit” a tough one for him. Because he came to us as a stray, a fenced yard would be a good idea to prevent him from ever wandering away again.

Jake is a happy, easy going boy who loves everyone. He is always eager to meet a new canine friend, and he takes a “live and let live” attitude toward cats. He loves to be near his human companions, taking an interest in their every activity. His foster mom says that this makes putting on her socks a bit of a challenge, since it isn't easy to put a foot into a sock that already contains a long collie nose. He is great with children, but they should be old enough to understand that his hip may cause him pain if they are too rough or if they climb on him.

Jake will make the perfect companion for an individual, couple or family that is looking for a calm, laid back dog that will hang on their every word, while looking adoringly into their eyes. And don't worry if you run out of interesting things to say; it's not so much what you say, it's that it's YOU saying it.
