My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Buta-san (boo-tah sahn), which means "beautiful pig" in Japanese, is a 5 year old pure bred Black and Tan female Shiba Inu that our rescue pulled at a puppy mill auction in Missouri in February. Before coming to rescue, Buta had never once lived in a house, walked on grass, worn a collar or leash, gone for a walk, been petted by people or done anything our canine companions do on a regular basis. Puppy mills are large scale USDA licensed breeders that sell puppies via the internet or to pet stores. The dogs' sole purpose is to produce puppies. The adults are given extremely minimal care and are left in cages their entire lives, just shelling out puppies. These dogs come to us usually extremely shy and fearful of human touch and are easily startled by everyday noises, movements and interactions. Many have a hard time adjusting to walking on a leash because they panick when the collar or harness gets slightly tight on their bodies since they've never worn such things before. These dogs take patience and understanding to come out of their shells and some may never be what one would consider a "normal" dog.

You can't really tell from the picture but Buta is actually extremely overweight from her days in the mill. She is currently on a low-calorie diet and since she is doing fairly alright on leash her foster mom is getting her out and walking her. She also loves to roll around in her foster mom's backyard, particularly in the really dirty patches, just like a little piggy =) However, this girl is a climber and can get both under and even over chain link fencing so she will need a yard with 6 foot wood fencing. We do not yet know if she'd do well living in an apartment.

Buta is cautious of new people but within a day, as soon as she knows you are the one that let's her out of the crate so she can go outside to do her business and you give her a few treats, she will follow you just about anywhere like a little shadow. She is very sweet and will give you affection "shiba ears" and "dink dink" her tail when she sees you. She loves to be petted and be in your company. She seems to do well with both men and women however she really wants nothing to do with children. They make her very nervous and she will pace and pant heavily, signs of stress, when one is near so please no homes with children.

Buta also does well with other dogs but will growl at them when she's in her crate, since it's her own space and she's confined. She also does well with cats.

Buta is doing well with potty training and is working on crate training. She is quiet in her crate but doesn't go in on her own yet. She is fed in her crate to help her associate positive things with the crate. She is also crated both at night and when her foster mom leaves so she doesn't associate the crate with only being left.

Buta-san's adoption fee is $275.00 which includes her spay, surgical dental, microchip, deworming, her distemper and rabies vaccinations, and a 6 week professional training course.
