My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Meet Ivan -

Ivan is an Akbash/Kuvasz cross. He is just over a year old and hasn't had the best upbringing as a pup. His original owner did not treat him with the love and respect a puppy needs and then was surrendered to a shelter. Ivan was sitting in a shelter for almost 4 months until ANML-RESQ was able to pull him and place him into foster care. Needless to say, he hasn't had the best life so far and the essential time of puppy hood and training has been missed. Because of the lack of positive associations in Ivan's young life, he has developed a lack of trust in people. In the right environment with a person or couple with a lot of patience and determination, Ivan can flourish and learn to trust again. He needs a home who is experienced with his type of breed mix and who understands how to effectively boost Ivan's confidence levels with positive experiences.

Ivan has been in foster care for almost 2 months now and has made a miraculous amount of of progress. When he first arrived, he was scared and confused about all the changes; including his fear of flooring. One day Ivan miraculously walked out of his crate and out to the kitchen as if he forgot about his fears of the floors all together. Ever since he's been great about the floors in the kitchen. Ivan is now slowly learning to overcome his fear of the flooring in the rest of the house with small steps forwards. With proper direction, Ivan can overcome anything.

Over time Ivan has learned to trust again and his true colours have now emerged. He is a sweet boy who just needs the chance to move forward with a lot of love, patience and fair treatment. He is a very happy go lucky dog with a tail that wags on a constant basis, seeks affection much more often and enjoys being a part of a family. He still has a lot of puppy energy that needs to be harnessed appropriately using positive techniques and while Ivan isn't too toy motivated, dehydrated liver treats will do the trick.

Ivan has met the resident dogs outside and was happy to meet them. He is just one oversized puppy with a lot of puppy exuberance and loves to play and flop around playfully. Because of his over excitement, a home with no small children is recommended. Ivan would benefit a home with another stable and playful dog to give him that extra boost of confidence and he also really enjoys the company of other dogs. A fenced yard is necessary to make exercising him much easier.

Before Ivan was pulled from the shelter, we were told that he was weary of men. So far Ivan has met Mike as well as his male vet with absolutely no issues. He has done exceptionally well with meeting new people considering his past. Ivan is slowly gaining some weight and hopefully he will reach his ideal weight soon. He's now sitting at 101 lbs and could stand to put on a little bit more weight. He will probably end up being 120-130 lbs when fully matured. Ivan has so much potential and will make a great addition to a home experienced in his unique breed or to a working home doing what his breed was meant to do for thousands of years; guarding his livestock family.

Ivan is neutered, fully up to date with all vaccines including rabies, and is microchipped. He is also fully crate trained and enters his crate on command and is non-destructive. He walks well with a gentle leader and is now much better then when he first arrived into foster care.
