My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Rena (pronounced like Layna or Dayna as the "r" in Japanese translation is more like a hard L or soft D), which means "new beginning", is a 1 year old Shiba Inu mix, most likely with Alaskan Malamute. She is about 40-45 pounds and her head is about at my knee. She was originally surrendered by her owners to Canon City Animal Shelter and then adopted in October. As an adolescent, she didn't mesh with the older dogs in the house so her family sent her away to do an extensive board and train program however she came back and still clashed with the resident dogs. Her owners surrendered her in hopes of her having a better home.

So far she is a typical 1 year old bundle of energy and personality. She can be hit or miss with other dogs. Out on walks she is nervous of them and barks and lunges--she'd rather they go away. But if introduced calmly and slowly with other dogs that are similar in personality to her--young, easy going, they can be the best of friends. She is also good with cats and loves getting affectionate pets and butt rubs.

Rena loves hanging out in the yard though we would never recommend leaving a dog of any kind outside if no one is home. She is also currently fostered in an apartment and does well. She is a puller on leash and may bark at first in her crate if not exercised enough before being crated.

Rena's biggest issue is once she goes into her crate, which she does willingingly and eagerly, she will turn around and growl at you, most specifically when you touch the door itself. This is a behavior she has had since day one out of the shelter according to the previous owners. The strange thing is when you walk away after crating her and come back she is happy to see you and there's no growling so it's not an all out resource guarding specifically over the crate.

Due to Rena's behavior at the crate door we do not recommend a home with young children under 12. Rena also much prefers women to men and is very cautious and barks at strangers that come in the home. However if they simply ignore her and better yet toss her treats, she warms up pretty quickly.

Rena is currently on anti-anxiety medication to see if it will help with her behavior with her crate. Recommended reading for Rena would be Fiesty Fido, Click to Calm, On Talking Terms with Dogs and Mine.

Rena's adoption fee is reduced to $250.00 since we are considering her special needs from the continued need for the medication she is on. She is spayed, up to date on distemper and rabies vaccinations and will be microchipped and come with a 6 week professional training course that uses positive reinforcement methods only.
