My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Looking for a handsome devil with a heart of gold? Meet Niels! Niels is a remarkably kind and loving young classic male BC. He arrived at WBCR a frightened, battered, emaciated and sick boy from a shelter in Utah. With medical attention and just a few weeks of consistent care, food, love, and sensitive handling, he has blossomed. We think that, by nature, Niels is a pretty confident guy. He just lost some of his swagger when some really rough times hit - but his swagger is returning! Combine this with his sweet and gentle nature and you have an amazing dog…he is full of happiness and seems to be very aware that he was ‘rescued’. He looks deep into your soul and seems to want you to know that he knows what was done for him and he will not forget it. He is making the most of his second chance, and every day seems to bring more happiness into Niels’ life.

This darling freckle face has never met a person or dog that he doesn’t like. Fortunately, with his charm, that feeling is usually reciprocated! He will attach to his family strongly, and he sure prances and dances and smiles every time his people walk in the door. He wants to be with his people always, but if he has to be left he ‘succumbs’ to the ordeal with a sigh and goes to sleep. Although he’s probably more of a people-focused dog, Niels plays very well with other canines who are up for the game and really enjoys their company. He plays fair, is kind, and is very willing to follow the rules. Niels would enjoy a canine friend but would also do well as an only dog if he were engaged actively in his family. He is probably a good candidate to get the “best behaved at the dog park” award…he is not submissive, but neither is he pushy or bossy. He just wants to be happy and he wants everyone around him to be happy! Niels does well with cats, but if they run he is not above a good chase; if he catches up to a cat he comes to a sudden stop because he doesn’t know what to do - he does not want to catch the cat, he just wants to chase! Dog savvy cats would be content with Niels around. He does not seem to have had much access to toys in his former life, but he is beginning to see that toys are pretty fun and is starting to play with them – he really likes his Kong! He is also becoming interested in fetching and we think he might get addicted…time will tell. No herding instinct has been seen in Niels yet. He is a hoot to be around and is delighted with every new adventure - hikes, runs, romping with his doggie friends, and snuggle time are his favorite activities. He is active and always up for a hike, run, romp or whatever – he loves to go for runs with his foster dad - but he is also very laid back when not engaged in something – probably a moderately high energy fellow. He is one of those rare active, but mellow, Border Collies, and is a very easy dog to be around.

A lovely nature – and good manners as well? Yes, it’s true. Niels has got a good set of skills already! He’s housetrained and cratetrained, and is familiar with the basics. He walks pretty well on a leash – he’s really good on leash when running – and is learning about being off leash and doing well. Niels is a pretty happy guy and getting happier and more relaxed with each new day. He is quite a sensitive boy – loudness, tension, and anger worry him. Because of this, Niels will not be placed in a home with younger children. He will do best with an adoptive family who will help him build confidence and gain experience, as well as continue with his basic manners training, to help him become the outstanding canine companion he can be!

Niels is now a healthy, happy boy who seeks a sensitive, caring home where he can shine and shower his people with love and happiness. Love, good food, a good daily run/walk, some playtime every day, and understanding are all Niels asks for. In return he will give love, friendship, and loyalty back a thousand-fold! Niels is a dog who lives to bring joy to those around him. If this special boy sounds like the one you are looking for, he would LOVE to meet you!

Niels is neutered, fully vetted, and living in a loving foster home near SLC, Utah.
