Here's what the humans have to say about me:
Shortly after being born in September of 2012, it was obvious that Braille and Iris suffered from a problem with their eyes. They both were immediately taken to a veterinary ophthalmologist and diagnosed with Eyelid Agenesis. This simply means they were born with a birth defect that resulted in their upper eyelids not being completely formed. Without upper eyelids, the eye has no protection from fur, eyelashes, dirt or injury. The fur and eyelashes often poke the eye, which is extremely painful and can eventually result in ulcers forming and blindness.
Even with a group of dedicated fosters, volunteers, and a specialist, an ulcer formed on Braille's right eye which ended up with him losing his right eye. When Braille was old enough, he went through several surgeries to correct his eyelids and to remove his right eye. He came through these surgeries with flying colors. During this time it was also discovered that Braille has a heart murmur. He has seen a cardiologist and is not on meds at this time, but he will require future rechecks.
Braille loves everyone and has been raised with both other cats and dogs. By watching him run and play you would never know he has limited vision. He loves to cuddle and be carried around. He is a total love bug. He also loves to play in water, whether it's the sink or dog water dish - if you're not careful, he will even try to jump in the shower or bathtub (with you)!
To adopt you must first complete an adoption application and either come to an adoption event or arrange to meet the cat in its foster home. We do not do same day adoptions so, generally, we can only adopt within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
