My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 6/2/13!!!

Nova's Foster tell us that Nova is very sweet and loving, although a tiny bit skittish at first. And he is really quite tiny - much smaller than his sister.

He gets along well with the dogs in his foster home and their boys adore Nova. He has had no accidents, likes to cuddle, does not bark, knows to sit for his food and comes when called. He seems to learn quickly and should be very easy to train. Nova is a very good dog!

Bio - Nova is an adorable 10-12 month-old Duck Toller mix that was rescued from a high kill shelter in AL, with his sister. He and his sister Nadia, are as cute as can be and have a look that resembles a Red Fox. Their coloring and coats are magnificent! And both dogs have the most stunning green eyes imaginable. While we believe they are littermates, they each have a personality all their own.

Pint-sized Nova weighs in at about 25 pounds. This little boy just loves to be held and doted upon. He has a lower energy level and is a bit more shy than Nadia. But once he warms up to you, he is your friend for life! Nova is good on his leash and enjoys going for rides in the car. He plays nicely with other dogs and is an all-round cheerful fellow! Nova is heartworm negative and is ready and waiting to be adopted!

While we have posted Nova and Nadia together, they are also available to be adopted separately.

Important Note: Duck Tollers are often mistaken for small Golden Retrievers. But if you think you are getting a mini version of a Golden, think again. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers are high energy, extremely intelligent, and they “think.” They will decide whether cooperation with you is in their best interest. But once they accept you as their leader, the bond is forever. Duck Tollers are affectionate and loving with family members and are very patient with children. Tollers have become popular, partly due to their size (which is small, compared to any of the other retriever breeds), and partly because of their beauty, intelligence, versatility, strong working drive and friendly nature. But size and visual appeal should not be the determining factor in selecting a Toller (or any other breed of dog) as a canine companion. A Duck Toller needs lots of mental stimulation and exercise. They require a long, brisk walk or jog daily, and they are always ready for action, desiring a job to do or some kind of activity. A great game of fetch is a favorite! This breed is not the best choice of dog for someone who is sedentary!

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
