Information:
Update 5/08/13: Elara is named for the 12th moon of Jupiter; she is the “E” dog in the Blind Dog Rescue Alliance name game astronomy theme. She was a stray in the Springfield, Illinois area and on the list to be euthanized until BDRA stepped in! Elara charmed every driver on her transport to her Virginia foster home and has been doing just great ever since she arrived.
One of the first things that happened when she got to her foster home was a trip to the groomer because she smelled like the shelter and her hair was matted. After getting her hair and nails done, she was even more beautiful than before! And she smelled good too!
In her first week, she also went to the vet and got a clean bill of health with the exception of two things. First, her teeth needed to be cleaned and, second, she had a very small lump on her chest. She went back in for a dental and now she has the nicest, cleanest smile! She also had the lump removed and it was sent off to see what it was. It did turn out to be a melanoma but there was very good news! Melanomas are scored from zero to ten (the mitotic index) and Elara’s melanoma was scored as a “zero to one.” The lowest possible score! Melanomas with a very low score like hers have the very best prognosis. She needs no treatment at all! And the vet said he got it all out. It is gone!
Elara is up to date on her shots, her joints are good (no luxating patellas), her weight is just about right (she looks broad but that is a combination of all her hair plus wide chest bones), her eyes are healthy (she does have mature bilateral cataracts), her ears are good. She is in great shape for a stray dog! And she is a small dog, so has many good years to go!
On the home front, she was a little nervous at first (and that is understandable) but has adjusted quickly. She gets along fine with our four resident dogs. She doesn’t mind them at all and they don’t mind her either. And she is just starting to show some interest in following them around.
She likes to be with people, so stays near us and will sleep at our feet. At night, she is in a crate and she is now settling right in and going to sleep.
She is housetrained and loves to go outside for a walk. As soon as her leash is clipped to her harness, she gets right up and is ready to go. She does pretty well on a leash; sometimes she will pull but usually she will walk right along with us.
She can’t see much but sees enough that she doesn’t often bump into things. She can’t hear much either, but she amazes us with her ability to move through our daily routine without a problem. She is smart and learns quickly. She is excited when we come home from work. She also loves to play! And loves to eat! She is such a great dog!!
Elara has not yet been around children. She would likely do just fine with older children and teens. Younger children would always need to be supervised around her just as young children should always be supervised around any dog.
Don’t consider adopting Elara unless you want a sweet, gentle, playful, smart, beautiful dog who just wants to be loved.
