My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 7/14/13!!!

Snowy is a handsome light-colored AKC registered Golden boy who is about 1.5 years old. Our volunteers who have met him told us that he is the lightest Golden they have ever seen. He has a nose that looks like a piece of coal and incredibly dark eyes – he totally resembles a snowman – or a snow dog! Snowy was kept as a farm dog in AL and the family found they just had too many animals to care for all of them properly. Snowy was kept as an outside dog, but true to his Golden nature, he longed for human companionship and both mental and physical activity. While Snowy got along wonderfully with all the animals on the farm – dogs, cats, and donkeys – he was not given much training in the way of manners. He is a diamond in the rough, but his former owner said that Snowy loves to please and listens well. He responds fairly quickly to directions and even knows a few commands like “sit” and “paw.” He just needs someone to show him what he should or should not do.

Prior to relinquishing Snowy to be re-homed, his former family noticed he walked with a slight limp and the vet found he was born with a congenital condition to his right front elbow. A procedure was done to correct this condition and down the road, he may need some arthritis meds or further attention to his leg. Snowy sometimes has a little hitch in his giddy-yap, but when you watch his video you would never know he is anything less than perfect!

Snowy’s ideal home would have a yard with a sturdy fence. He needs an active owner who can provide him with adequate exercise to burn off the energy that a young dog has, yet can monitor the special needs of his “lucky leg.” Because of his exuberance for life, SGRR will only place Snowy in a home with children over 10. Another dog to play with would be wonderful because Snowy enjoys other dogs and he even tolerates cats. Snowy is a smart dog who will benefit greatly from a basic obedience course and his new owners must be committed to doing this. Consider adopting Snowy because you embrace the essence of rescuing a dog, and despite the "endearing imperfections" that this dog may arrive with, you are committed to molding him into becoming the Golden he was meant to be.

Snowy is up-to-date on his vaccinations, is heartworm negative, and is neutered. He is a boy who relishes affection and wants to be very close to his human pals. Based on Snowy’s needs, we can only consider placing him with approved applicants who are home most of the day and have a great deal of time and attention to dedicate to him.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
