Piper is a ten year old self mutilating male Moluccan cockatoo who has been mutilating his chest for five years. His family loves him and has always taken exceptional care of him. In spite of a great diet, clean and safe environment and routine vet care he persists in his destructive behavior. His family is getting older and relinquished him to FPR to make sure he has the best of everything possible. It was not any easy decision for them, but one they wanted to make before it had to be made in haste. He is now in foster care and his wound needs treatment to start his journey into recovery. His treatment will start immediately and will be a combination of vet care by a certified avian vet and socialization with other cockatoos. Treatment of mutilators is lengthy and costly and is typically a slow process involving both medical and behavioral treatment. Piper is a fun, silly and loving bird, a real ham with so much character. If you can, please help us by contributing to his vet care. If you cannot help financially, spread the word about Piper and let people know there is hope and future for birds like him with proper vet care and rehabilitation.
