Adopted 7/14/13!!!
This 7 month old Golden Retriever/St. Bernard mix was turned into a shelter by a kind woman in AL who had been feeding this boy. This pup lived in a trailer park and his owners were not even providing him with food or water. He lived outside and would make his way over to this Samaritan’s home for life’s basic sustenance. When she approached his owners about his lack of care, they told her that they didn’t want him and that she could keep him. When she asked his name, they replied that they didn’t even give him and name and just called him “dog.” She had heard enough and although she had dogs of her own, she knew a better life was waiting out there for this boy!
Oscar is now with a loving foster family in AL where he is receiving nutritious food, shelter, and tons of TLC. He is incredibly skinny and presently weighs only 58 pounds but will grow up to be a big boy when he is full grown. Oscar's foster mom reports that he loves his food and treats so he will put on much needed weight quickly. Oscar came to SGRR frightened and abused. He was afraid of dogs and cats and especially timid with men. We suspect his former male owner was not very kind to Oscar but he has warmed up to his foster daddy quite nicely! His foster mom says that Oscar has a “forgive & forget” attitude and is now friends with their neighbor’s 4 pound Yorkie. We suspect he would be fine with cats too but he has not had any exposure to kitties. Oscar enjoys the company of his young human sister and she is working with him on leash walking.
Oscar is well-mannered in the house and has had only 2 accidents since being in his foster home – not bad for a guy who’s lived outside all of his life! Oscar sleeps through the night next to his foster mommy & daddy’s bed. Oscar has probably never had toys in his life before and is not totally sure what to do with them. He would benefit from having a canine sibling to show him how to play with toys, chase balls, and find his inner dog. A confident canine companion would also be a good mentor for Oscar and help him feel more secure and help bring him along.
Oscar’s foster mom describes this pup as a “gentle soul” who is incredibly sweet. He is a mellow boy who enjoys a good romp but then settles down nicely. Susan says, “he is perfectly beautiful with soft white fur with a few tan markings. He is joyful and happy in his foster home but care will need to be taken when introducing Oscar to new situations so he does not regress and shut down. But he is very open to love. He’s pretty dog-gone great!!!”
Oscar is heartworm negative and up-to-date on his vaccinations. He will be neutered when he has put on adequate weight and will then be ready for his forever home. If you are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact the

About Our Rescue
Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.
A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.
The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.
Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
