Check out the beginning of my rescue story below…
…Well look at me now I have hair almost everywhere and it’s getting long, over an inch in most places. My tail is starting to have feathering on it and my feet look like mini bushes mom says. I still have a bald spot on my neck and on my tummy, but that’s ok – it doesn’t show much. My thyroid is in the normal range as long as I take my medicine every day and I like taking it cause it smells like chocolate – yummm! My foster mom says I am healthy now and that it is time to find my forever home, so if you know anyone looking for a companion who likes long walks, rides in the car and gives good tummy rubs, let them know about me. I am house trained and love to lay around in what ever room is the warmest. Even when you are not home I am a very good girl. I don’t get into things I am not supposed to nor do I chew on things I am not supposed to. I like to fetch a ball sometimes; but mostly I just like to throw it up in the air and try to catch it all by myself. Tug is also a good game for me but watch out – I am pretty strong.
I am 8-years-old and being fostered in Michigan. I am good with kids over 12, I love people and being petted and I would like to be an only dog.
Yasmine’s Story – when she first came into rescue:
A trip to the vet and she was diagnosed with a full body external yeast infection and put on an antifungal. That was back in July and she is still fighting that yeast infection. Fast forward to September when Yasmine was transferred to MidAmerica Border Collie Rescue when she came to live with me as a foster. By then some of her hair had grown back but she still looked so sad and miserable. After spending a couple of days with her I noticed that she would not let me touch her head much and she seemed to not hear very well. Another trip to the vet showed that her ears were swelled completely shut and all that scratching from the yeast infection had introduced bacteria into the skin. What little hair she has is on her back and very dry and brittle along with her weight of 70 pounds and all the other symptoms made us wonder if she maybe had an underlying problem causing all of this so we drew blood for a full blood panel and a thyroid profile. After an hour we left the vets office with an antibiotic, ear drops and about half a dozen doggie treats in her belly that she had managed to con out of everybody.

Her weight is down to 67.5 lbs. and her skin is looking better, some of her hair has started to grow back she still needs to finish the antibiotic for that and her right ear is still not healed so we started on ear drops again. Surgery to correct her lower right eye lid that is rolled in and irritating the eye, spay her and remove her rear dew claws is scheduled for October 9, 2012.

She weighed in at 64.4lbs before surgery and now has peach fuzz hair all over her body except for her stomach. Surgery went great and a big surprise she was already spayed yeaaaa. She is now sporting lovely pink stiches that look like perfectly curled lower lashes that will be taken out in 10 days. Her eye is a bit runny but that should clear up in a couple of days when the swelling goes down. She is still quite tipsy from the gas during surgery to the point where she can’t even stand up yet. She crawled over to the 5” foam cushion she uses as a bed and promptly went to sleep for the night.

Stiches came out this morning but her tummy is still an angry red color. It reminds me of a bad sunburn but doesn’t seem to bother her. She will remain on an antibiotic until this is gone. Her hair is coming in nicely and it looks as if she might be a blue and white with beautiful freckling on her legs. She also lost a few more pounds and is down to 62.4. Her thyroid is now too high so we have cut her medicine in half to .8 mg once daily and will test again in 30 days.

Yazmine’s belly is still ugly red like a bad sunburn but her hair is starting to look normal. Her leg hair has such beautiful light gray freckling and is back to normal length now. The hair on her chest and neck area has come in now and just has to gain length to look like the hair on her back. Some day she will have a nice fluffy coat again. As soon as we get her thyriod leveled out and her tummy cleared up she will be put up for adoption so watch for her on the adoptions page.
