My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

UPDATED 07/31/2013: DOOLEY is 10 years old and currently weighs 6 lbs – a healthier weight for him would be 5 – 5 ½ lbs; he is being fostered in The Villages, FL, north of Orlando.

Dooley was surrendered by his owners (who didn’t want him anymore) to a high-kill shelter ~ so sad, because he probably spent all of his life with them, giving them lots of happiness and love. Dooley is doing excellent in his foster home – he acts like he has been there all his life. He gets along with the other dogs in the home. He is sooooo sweet and adorable; he has a very curious nature and is engaging when you talk to him. Housetraining is still a work in progress as it appears that Dooley doesn’t have a clue about where he is supposed (and not supposed) to go! Thank Goodness for bellybands!

Dooley is a lovable and small little fella with a huge appetite! He currently eats 4 small meals a day (he wasn’t happy with only 3 meals a day), and he will remind FM if she’s late in giving him his tiny meal. He has no teeth, but he sure doesn’t have trouble chowing down on the kibble he eats. His rear legs were stiff and hurting when he came into rescue, but since he started taking a Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM supplement, he has a spring in his step! He will jump over the very small threshold going from one room to another, just because it’s there and it’s fun to do it! He loves loves loves his person and will follow them around everywhere they go. He adores snuggling and will lie on your chest and go to sleep quickly. If you are looking for a companion dog that loves to cuddle, then choose Dooley!

Unfortunately for Dooley, his chronic dry eyes have gone untreated for a long period of time and he has very little vision in one eye, but seems to see okay out of the other eye. He is being treated with RX eye drops, which has helped his one eye see clearer, and will likely need to continue with the drops. At first, we thought Dooley was deaf, and he may have been as a result of yucky, waxy ears, but he is hearing much better now; he knows his name and responds well to it, especially since it may potentially mean he is getting his little mini-meal, lol! Dooley has also been diagnosed with chronic bronchitis, and will need to be on medication for the rest of his life for this, which controls his coughing almost 90% ~ yeah!

Please don’t turn away from Dooley due to these medical issues ~ these types of things happen to humans, too, as we age, and we certainly wouldn’t want folks to turn away from us or ignore us because of it. Dooley has no teeth, so his adopters will save money on dentals. Dooley loves to give kisses and snuggle with his person. He gets along with other dogs, mostly by just ignoring him, so he would do well as an only dog, or one who is close to his age and size. He’s a real sweetie who deserves a loving home for the rest of his life.

UPDATED BIO 06/26/2013 DOOLEY is 10 years old and weighs a chubby 6.25 lbs – a healthier weight for him would be 5 – 5 ½ lbs; he is being fostered in The Villages, FL, north of Orlando.

Dooley was surrendered by his owners who didn’t want him anymore to a high-kill shelter ~ so sad, because he probably spent all of his life with them, giving them lots of happiness and love. Due to his age and the fact that he was obviously neglected in the past few years, he was scheduled to be PTS, but UYR arranged for a rescue angel to pick him up. He is a sweet and adorable little boy who is very engaging and curious. His foster parents are working with him on his housetraining, but he seems to be getting the hang of it. He loves to eat and lives to eat and will let FM know when he is hungry by barking at her. So now he gets 3 small meals a day which makes him very happy.

Dooley is being treated for wheezing, along with some coughing, and currently we are trying different medications to see how he responds. It is believed that he either has chronic bronchitis or a potential collapsing trachea. Unfortunately for Dooley, his chronic dry eyes have gone untreated for a long period of time and he has very little vision in one, but seems to see okay out of the other one. He is being treated with eye drops and it is hoped that these will continue to help the one eye see clearer. At first, we thought Dooley was deaf, and he may have been as a result of yucky, waxy ears, but he is hearing much better now, especially if you raise your voice just a little for him.

Please don’t turn away from Dooley due to these medical issues ~ these types of things happen to humans, too, as we age, and we certainly wouldn’t want folks to turn away from us or ignore us because of it. Dooley has no teeth, so his adopters will save money on dentals! It surely doesn’t bother his ability to eat! Dooley loves to give kisses and snuggle with his person. He gets along with other dogs, mostly by just ignoring him, so he would do well as an only dog, or one who is close to his age and size. He’s a real sweetie who deserves a loving home for the rest of his life.
