Nova is an adorable, quirky, spunky kind of gal who has won over our household. I have been having a really hard time putting her adoption advertisement together as this family just adores her. We have quite a full nest already, and because I want to continue to be able to foster we really can’t keep her….but if we could, we really REALLY would. She deserves a second chance to be happy and to be someone’s sunshine. She is a senior girl with a few quirks but is in good health and just looking for a loving home to live her life out. She is a tiny thing at just over 10 lbs.

Personality plus would be an understatement for this pint sized senior gal. She is charming, fun and has quickly adjusted to life in a home full of critters (4 cats, 2 dogs). She does not bother with the cats at all, and I think that the cats actually think she is one of them since they are really close in size. She doesn’t bother or fuss about the other dogs in the house either. It’s almost like she has always been here.
Nova, who we affectionately call Izzy, is a saucy wee lass, not afraid to give her apparent opinion or to let us know when she needs something. She barks when it is necessary, for example, when she would like to be carried across my kitchen floor that she refuses to have any part in venturing across on her own. She protests the linoleum, but doesn’t mind the hard wood. Strange but true. She is also not a fan of our laminate flooring upstairs, but that’s ok since she would prefer to hang out on the main floor (which is mostly carpeted) and isn’t in a hurry to go up and down stairs on her own. She is capable of doing the stairs, but if she thinks she can convince you to carry her up and down them, she would prefer that! Yes, she is a bit of a princess but we love her for it. Although it doesn’t seem to be a problem for her, she does favor her left back leg a little bit so we do often accommodate her divalicious behavior. It is not something that is particularly prominent, but I have noticed it when she is going up or down the stairs, and is probably why she would prefer the security of some helpful hands to bring her up and down them.
She is very curious about everyone here, human and animal alike, and is sure to investigate what everyone is up to before setting down in her spot. When she is ready to relax, she goes around in a circle, changing directions, sometimes walking away and looking at her potential spot wondering if that is really the right one. It is quite a ritual! She is very entertaining.
She loves play time and is very gentle. She does not have a favorite toy, in fact rarely bothers with them at all. She does quite like our other smaller dog Cosby and she follows him around, taunting him and barking at him trying to get him to play with her. We are not sure what she is saying but I am pretty sure that she is telling him how it’s going to be!
Nova is not treat or food crazed, and most often will walk away from the treats that the rest of our critter family love! She is actually more inclined to head for her water dish before her food dish. However, she is a fan of hot dogs cut into tiny bits and she does like the marrow bones that we give our dogs. I was surprised by this because for her they are large, but she manages to take them apart with a little effort. I have tried smaller sized treats especially for her but she is just not interested. I’m sure that there is one out there that she will love, we just haven’t figure it out yet. I did catch her eyeing the cat treats!
Nova’s water intake does need to be monitored. She will drink and drink and drink some more…followed by piddling, piddling and piddling some more. If you haven’t figured out her cues yet, this could lead to some accidents in the house. We have been giving her a drink first thing in the morning, in the afternoon and at supper time. I also give her the occasional ice cube as she can’t gulp this down as quickly and encourages her (because she has no choice) to drink more slowly. This seems to be a good trick as we haven’t had an accident in the house since we changed her water intake routine. Please note that when she needs to go outside, she becomes quite anxious and paces…she will sometimes even whine a bit. This is quite subtle and you do need to pay attention for this cue. She will let you know when she needs to go which is great if you know what to look for!
A leash is this girl’s best friend. She gets quite excited when she sees it, and knows that this means it is time for her to get her sniff on. She loves to walk, and although she pulls a bit, she is so small that this really is not an issue. She doesn’t bother with other dogs that she passes but will occasional bark at the people she sees. A quick reminder to her that she needs to not do this is usually all she needs to go back to her mission and move along. She is great in the car and likes to take in the scenery and outdoor smells as we drive along. She will occasionally chat to the folks in the car next door, but we think she is just saying “hey….over here….pay attention to me!” She is a character.
Nova is a special girl and we love her to bits. I can’t wait for that special person to scoop her up and adopt her. She is a loyal, loving pet, and she certainly deserves to have that in return.
