My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Megumi (may-goo-mee), which means "blessed" in Japanese, is a 6 year old (born on Christmas eve) pure bred female Akita that our rescue was able to pull from a puppy mill auction in Missouri. Before coming to rescue Megumi had never lived in a house, never walked on a leash, never felt a soft dog bed, played with a toy or felt the loving hand of a caring human. She was just bred over and over until she was of no use to the breeding facility.

Since coming to rescue Megumi has made excellent progress and you'd never know she actually was huddled over in her crate the day she arrived in rescue, terrified of the humans around her and her new surroundings.

Here is what her foster parents have to say about her and a recent trip she made to Pennsylvania. She had a great home lined up to adopt her but after meeting Megumi the family decided it was not the best time to add another dog to the household.

"Megumi is doing really well, she had many great experiences on the trip to Harrisburg. She loves riding in the car and going up a ramp into the car. She met a lady in a motorized wheelchair and she came up to her and let her pet her head. She enjoyed staying in a motel and sleeping with a sleeping bag over her. She interacted well with a room filled with 6 adults and 4 kids plus a papillon that she had never met before. She let them pet her while she laid on the floor, and we took a walk with one 6 year old and her dad, the 6 year old would follow her and pet her. She was adjusting well to the applicant's house, finding several places to sleep, and she loved the backyard. She met probably 100 other people along the way and did very well. Since returning to Colorado her personality has blossomed and she is more energetic, loves to check out all the new smells on the walks, loves to lay in the grass. In Harrisburg we sat down in the grass under a nice shade tree and she fell asleep even though there were a lot of noisy cars driving past.

"Megumi loves to sleep in her crate, and she knows "go to bed" to go into her crate. She will usually settle if you stop on a walk for a few minutes, and checks in with you pretty consistently. She rarely pulls, and is starting to take treats more consistently on a walk. She takes treats from our hands all the time around the house. She lets you know when she needs to go outside to potty. She loves toys and will de-fur and de-squeak them before shaking the crap out of them

"Megumi will let out a low "Woof" when she is concerned about something like someone new rushing into our space during a walk. This is a typical Akita alert behavior to let their people know something is out of the ordinary."

Megumi would love a home with ideally another dog that she can make a bond with. We do not know how she would do with cats. And while she does well with children in small doses, we feel it would be best for her to be adopted into a home without kids.

Megumi's adoption fee is $275.00 which includes her spay, two lump biopsies (both benign), distemper and rabies vaccinations, heartworm test, microchip and professional training course.
