My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

If you always wanted a collie, but thought you should have a smaller dog, then Shiloh the mini collie is just the girl for you.

Shiloh is a smooth coated collie who weighs in at a petite 34 pounds. But don't be fooled by her diminutive stature: she packs enough love in that little body for a girl twice her size. She was surrendered to MWCR from a loving family who, because of a move to a smaller home, believed that she would be happier in a situation where she had more space to run and more attention. She is a young, energetic dog who enjoys playing with other dogs and has a great time socializing at the dog park.

She has lived with children ages 8-10 and really loves kids. She doesn't play with toys, but does try to “mouth” your arm, so very young children might be frightened. Although her mouthing is not meant to be aggressive, it can sometimes be quite painful, and her new home will need to work with her to help curb this behavior.

Shiloh is a very well behaved girl who is fully house trained and can be left alone for up to ten hours without fear of misbehavior or accidents. Her foster family has never crated her, since there really is no need to. She knows several commands including “come,” “sit” and “wait” and in her previous home she did a 4H obedience program. She walks nicely on her gentle leader and generally rides well in the car though she will sometimes lunge when she sees passing cars. If this poses a problem, it might be best to have her ride in a kennel or use another type of restraint. Shiloh has a strong herding drive and will try to chase anything that moves: birds, cars, bicycles, etc. For this reason she will need a forever home with a fenced yard where she can run and play safely. While herding, she likes to bark and nip in the typical collie fashion, so she would be happiest in a living situation where her barking will not disturb neighbors. Most collies like the sound of their own voices, but Shiloh's barking is excessive and her forever family will need to work with her. She loves any kind of attention and really enjoys being groomed.

Shiloh is a happy, loving girl who is always friendly to strangers that she meets while out and about. However, she can be protective when they come to the door and will bark until she realizes that the “intruders” are welcome. She likes to play other dogs and with children who are old enough to understand that her “mouthing” behavior is just a form of play. She is cautious around kitties, but has not shown an inclination to chase them. Shiloh will make a wonderful addition to an active family that will include her in their activities. She would love to have older children or another energetic young dog to play with, and she must have a fenced yard where she can burn off energy safely. Unlike many collies, Shiloh has a real passion for water and if her forever family took her to the lake for a swim now and then, she would be one very happy girl. She may be small in stature, but she has a big heart that is full of love.
