My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Maya is our little "miracle girl." She was found curled up on the asphalt, abandoned behind a grocery store as a tiny infant pup. She was less than 8 weeks old. We took her straight to the vet and learned that she had scabies. A relentless all day search found her a foster home willing to lend their care and an outdoor kennel where she could be quarantined while she went through 8 weeks of isolation and medical care.

Despite her long isolation, with only her caregivers as friends, Maya emerged from quarantine with a happy, bouncy disposition and bursting to meet all the other dogs she could hear in the distance. Once she was no longer contagious, friends and neighbors jumped in to help socialize her with their dogs. She was ecstatic! Maya loves other dogs. She meets people and dog friends with unbridled joy and exuberance.

We learned too that somehow Maya had contracted distemper and had recovered by the time she was found. Her poor little immune system was shot and she came down with demodectic mange which is NOT contagious. While she was treated for that, she was able to keep up socially with the other dogs and she seemed completely unaware that she wasn't well.

Two months ago we moved her to an indoor foster home where she is learning doggie things. She is learning to walk nicely on a leash, she is house-trained, knows some basic commands, and LOVES to show off that she is a very good little girl. About 35 lbs and not expected to grow much bigger, Maya is a loving, cheerful pup with tons of puppy energy. She loves to hike and run and play fetch. We treated her both with conventional medical care, herbal remedies and acupuncture and her last medical exam 2 weeks ago showed full recovery. We were finally able to spay her mid-October.

Maya is ready for her forever home. She is a wonderful, happy, healthy girl now. She will always need extra dental care because of the distemper but she has shown to be a true survivor with a loving, confident nature. She will need to stay on good quality food and supplements to keep her immune system strong. She needs an active home where she can run and play with dogs and human friends. She loves to be outdoors but she is also very grateful for her hard-earned indoor comforts.

If you can give this sweet girl a loving, active forever home, please fill out an application at http://www.goldenbonerescue.org/ or email goldenbone4pets@yahoo.com

Maya is about 6 months old. She is fully recovered from her long battle to survive.
