Rufus's Story...
Meet Rufus – Rufus and his sibling were hanging around a dollar store in Houston's East End in July 2013. One of the clerks contacted Barrio Dogs to see if we could help. By the time we were able to trap Rufus, his sibling had been hit by a car and killed. Luckily, Rufus is now safe and on his way to a better life.
Rufus is a Chihuahua mix, born around February 2013. At 5 months, he weighs 6 pounds and is most likely fully grown. He was vetted and treated for demodex and intestinal worms. He will be neutered before he is adopted.
Rufus was initially fostered in a home with several large dogs and loved hanging out and playing with them. He is now in a foster home with smaller dogs and he gets along well with them too. He is not so crazy about cats and barks at them. He is a super sweet pup who loves to sit in people's laps. If you can give this sweet survivor a great forever home, please contact

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Rufus, a Houston Chihuahua dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Chihuahua for sale in Houston, or seeking a Chihuahua dog from a breeder in Houston.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Houston already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Houston breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Chihuahua breeders who help with Chihuahua rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Houston paves the way for another one to be saved.
