My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 8/28/13!!!

In mid- May, one of SGRR’s volunteers in AL received an email from a shelter in AL asking if SGRR ever takes “non-golden" colored retriever mixes. The shelter had just taken in a super sweet injured black retriever-type dog who had been roaming around as a stray. A kind lady had been feeding this girl but knew that living on the streets was not a good life so she called the shelter. The shelter tried to find her owner and despite her wearing a dirty old collar, no one seemed to own this sweet girl. In the past, SGRR has experienced an overwhelming interest in these “black goldens,” although Spirit turned out to be an Aussie (mix?). We welcomed this girl to our rescue and named her Spirit. Unfortunately, Spirit had to stay at the shelter longer than SGRR would have wanted when she came down with kennel cough. When she finally got to our rescue, Spirit had a surprise for SGRR - she was ready to deliver puppies!

Destiny and Gideon were born on June 15th and will be ready to go to their forever home in late August. They are adorable bundles of fluff and are very well socialized. Destiny has a very “golden” look, we believe she is an Golden/Aussie mix with atypical yellow coloring. She is outgoing and loves to be held. She will nibble on toes if you are wearing sandals. Her brother, Gideon, has the look of a blue merle Aussie and prefers to lick your toes. He is a more laid back kind of guy and loves to be cuddled and held. They are inseparable and their personalities compliment each other so well! These pups are just over-the-top adorable and so easy to love! (See their video taken at 2 weeks.)

The pups are in a foster home in AL now and their foster mom tells us, "They are both gorgeous and adorable! They adore each other and sleep, eat, and play together all day. Destiny is the more outgoing, adventurous one, while Gideon is a bit more reserved and laid back. They both enjoy exploring the backyard and pouncing on each other. They both like playing with their toys. For Destiny, it was love at first sight with a tennis ball! She can easily carry that big tennis ball around in her little mouth. They are both friendly and loving. Gideon likes to be held more, while Destiny is more of a wiggle-worm with places to go and things to do. She looks and feels like Winnie-the-Pooh Bear with her plump belly and warm golden, fluffy coat. Gideon has a shiny, soft coat with beautiful Aussie markings and golden brown legs…and a plump belly! They both sleep well all night long…along with several naps during the day. They are two sweet, fun, loving, playful, and beautiful pups!!! And, they both give really nice puppy kisses!!!"

Puppies require a great deal of time, attention and patience. We can only consider applications for puppies from folks who are home most of the day. If you are already approved to adopt through SGRR, please contact the Adoption Committee to be considered for Destiny or Gideon. Or, if not yet approved, please complete an online application, to be considered to adopt Destiny or Gideon. Application.

Note: In the case of a dog under 6 months, the Adopter agrees to have the dog spayed or neutered within 1 month of the dog turning 6 months old. The Adopter agrees to send proof of this to SGRR and SGRR reserves the right to contact the Adopter’s veterinarian for confirmation.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.
