My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Hello, I am Edwin. I am a 10 month old Husky /Border Collie cross. I am quiet and although I am shy at first, I don’t take long to warm up to anyone who wants to give me some attention, especially belly rubs. Then I turn into a sweet cuddly puppy. I weigh about 35-40lbs and am a medium sized dog suitable for most home situations.

An adoption donation of $400 is required. This helps cover our costs for veterinary care including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, heartworm test, deworming and whatever else the dog may require.

You will spot the Husky in me right away, with my bushy tail and pointy ears. I have a beige coat with dark splashes, and the friendliest face you will every see. I am the size of a Border Collie and have a lean build. Some say that I look like a coyote, but have no fear, I am all dog and love all the comforts of a caring home. I prefer my hair to stay with me, so I don’t shed too much at all. If you want an affectionate, quiet dog that enjoys spending time outside, I could be the perfect match for you.

I was found wandering the rural highway with another canine friend when we were taken to the pound. I was not cared for very well by my previous owners, and was very skinny, and covered in fleas and ticks when I was found. Since then I have had lots of care in my foster home, and my skin is looking and feeling great, and I am eating lots of good food. I love getting brushed, having my nails trimmed and getting my teeth brushed! I enjoy pampering and good care as I didn’t get a lot of that before, so I will take all I can get now.

Unfortunately, I have been diagnosed with heartworm. This is a completely preventable disease spread by mosquitoes. Sadly my previous owner didn’t put me on heartworm preventative and I got infected. The good news is that the vet caught it early and that heartworm is treatable! I am very lucky to have been taken in by a caring dog rescue that is willing to treat my heartworm and make me all better. I am taking medication to prepare me for my upcoming treatment. In a couple of months I will get my treatment, and I will be heartworm free in no time. The vet has said that I am otherwise healthy and fit (and a real charmer!) and I have been cleared to be adopted. I will require a family that will work with Pound Dog Rescue to complete my treatment, which will be paid for by the rescue. My new family needs to live close enough to my vet in Cambridge to be able to get me to my appointments and will follow along with my recovery plan. This basically requires keeping me quiet and calm following treatments which won’t be a real problem as I prefer a peaceful life. I am not a hyper dog at all so being calm suits me just fine. Once cured I will need to be kept on yearly heartworm preventative which is a requirement for all dogs anyway so is not anything out of the ordinary. My vet and my rescue have experience treating heartworm and we all have nothing but the highest expectations that everything will go well and I will be heartworm free soon. I am young and healthy and am looking forward to getting better.

I am housetrained. I wait at the door, or wander to my master then wait at the door again until I am taken out. This is how you will know I need to go out. I prefer to do my business when I walk, and not when I’m let out in the backyard. Because of this I need a family that likes to walk and will take me out regularly. I am crate trained as well. It takes a bit of encouragement to get me in there, but once I am in, I lay there quietly until I am let out and get to stretch out and enjoy life.

I am currently attending level one obedience classes, and would love to graduate. Learning makes me happy and so far I have learned sit, lie down, stay and come. I am a great walker, and am getting the hang of “heel.” They tell me I am pretty smart! I would like a family that will take me to dog school so I can continue to learn. I really like school and learning!

I am a pretty trusting dog, and don’t take long to open up to new people as long as they are patient with my shyness! I enjoy rolling around on the floor while getting belly rubs and gently wrestling. I really love any type of affection. I didn’t get a lot before so will take any kindness that comes my way.

I love being walked 2-3 times a day so I get my exercise and will sometimes jog for a bit. They don’t need to be long walks, but I love getting fresh air. I’m sure when I am done my heartworm treatment I will want to take longer walks, and run around a little more. I enjoy exploring a fenced in backyard, but it is not a must. When I am inside, I usually hang out around my friends and relax. I am a dog that would be suitable to an apartment, condo or house with or without a yard. I can really live anywhere as long as I have a loving family.

I am great with other dogs, and cats don’t bother me at all. I am living with a foster dog sister and get along with her well. I can certainly go to a home with another dog but it will have to be a dog that is on heartworm preventative. I will be cured soon but would hate to take a chance. I also love kids that give me lots of attention but would prefer a home with calm and gentle kids if there are any. I need peace and quiet after my treatments so a home with rambunctious young children will be too much for me. If you think we’re a good match, let my rescuers at Pound Dog Rescue know! Anyone interested in me should research heartworm disease and be familiar with it. I am lucky in that my heartworm disease was caught very early so when you are researching the treatment etc keep that in mind. Some dogs don’t get diagnosed until they are massively infected and treatment can be very risky at that point. I have a great prognosis for full recovery. Yay!!! I am looking for a loving family that likes walks and outings and want a dog to cuddle with when our adventures are done for the day. I had bad luck in my first family so am really hoping for a responsible and caring family this time around. Could this be you?
