My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Homer is quite a guy. In his first week of retirement, this young fella has learned to navigate steps, does well on the hardwood floors (as long as he's not too excited about going outside to play!) and he already loves his stuffies and squeakies. He's running the yard with our 7-year old retired greyhound (Bowie) and he has been small animal safe. We have two 14 week old Min-Pin mix puppies and he hasn't bothered them one bit. In fact, he even plays with them at times! He also does well with kids. He has taken to my 12-year-old daughter and when he went to my 10-year-old son's football practice the other day, he absolutely LOVED the attention from all the kids. He is doing well with the crate and has had no accidents in it or the house. He moved to mark once in the house, but when he was told no, he stopped and hasn't motioned since. He is curious and will check out everything he is allowed, but he also respects boundaries pretty well for his short time here.

Update:
Homer has now been with us for 3 and a half weeks and is improving every day. He knows his name, though he is still working on recall. He responds to "house" when it's time to go in and he recognizes "crate." Though he doesn't like going into the crate on command, he does crate well. He is beginning to take treats from my hand instead of making me drop it on the floor and he does like rawhides. He still likes toys of all sorts and is pretty good at sharing them. However, he does not like sharing his bones and food with other dogs. If he feels they are getting too close, he will growl and if they advance, he will protect his stash. On the positive side, he is not aggressive when I touch him or his food.

His curiosity is really blossoming. If something of interest is left out, he will pick it up (ever so gently - it's kind of funny to see) and then drop it when told "leave it." (Note: we are using the term "leave it" because one of the puppy's names is Drop.) He truly likes checking out anything new or interesting and seeing what he can get away with tasting. He is responding very well to "no" and "leave it," however. My 5th grade son brought home his baritone from his first day of band and Homer hasn't run yet! The other three run for the hills, but Homer looks at my son like he's nuts.

He is a very gentle soul, despite his young age. He loves to play, both with his toys and with the pups who are now about 14 or 15 weeks old now. He LOVES outside. He would stay out there for an hour or so if allowed. He lounges in the grass when he isn't running with Bowie, playing with the pups, or exploring in the brush.
