My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

This happy lad is Hondo and he is a 9mth old Husky X. He is only 35lbs though so we believe that he is crossed with Shiba Inu which keeps him smaller and compact. Hondo is a fun and friendly dog that is always smiling and up for whatever activity you want to do. Hondo came to us from a rural pound where he was an unclaimed stray. We have found Hondo to be a well behaved, responsive and fun dog that is easy to live with and a great companion. We can’t believe that someone would let him roam loose and then not claim him. Hondo is better off though as he deserves a better home where he will be loved and cared for and never abandoned again.

Hondo is active and athletic and will be a great companion for an active family. He would be a great running partner but if running isn’t your thing he will also do well with long walks. He loves the outdoors and will participate in anything you are doing. Hondo travels well in the car and has a huge grin on his face the whole time. When he sees another dog he plasters his face against the car window and watches intently until he cant see the other dog any more. Hondo quite likes other dogs and is being fostered with other dogs and he plays well with all of them. Hondo doesn’t like to be bossed around by pushy dogs though so he would do well in a home with another dog that is playful and loves to run and wrestle but is not overly dominant. He would also be fine being the only dog and getting all the doggie attention himself. Hondo is also being fostered with cats and pretty much ignores them if they ignore him. He will try and chase a cat if it runs from him though. So if he is going to go to a home with a cat it should be a calm cat used to being around dogs. Hondo has also been exposed to many farm animals and really doesn’t show any aggression or bad behaviour towards any of them. Hondo gives what he receives and if other animals are cool with him, he is cool back.

Hondo is active and playful outdoors but is calm and settled inside. He loves to lie at your feet while you are watching TV and you won’t hear a peep out of him. He hasn’t shown much interest in toys yet and we don’t believe he had a lot of exposure to toys before coming to our home. He is quite happy just being with his people and getting the occasional pat on the head. He is an affectionate dog but is not annoying about it and will take all the affection you give him but won’t bug for more. He would be a great dog for someone who works from home as he is quiet and calm in the house and not prone to loud outbursts or activity. Hondo’s ideal home would have a large fenced backyard where he can run safely and play. He likes being outside but being part Husky he needs the security of a fenced area. He is getting used to being crated when we leave the home but he can get a bit vocal when you first leave as crating is new to him. Because of this an apartment or condo might not be the best fit for him. He does quiet down and will rest quietly until you return and we expect with time he will get used to the crate and not feel the need to express his displeasure. He is already much better than when we first started crating him. We do crate him though as he is a pup still and we don’t feel he is ready yet for free reign of the home unattended. He hasn’t had an accident in our home and always “goes” outside when we let him out. We take him out regularly to establish a routine and he does well with this.

Hondo is a unique looking dog with his small stature and 2 coloured eyes. He attracts a lot of attention wherever we go with him. He is friendly with everyone and loves all the attention he gets. Hondo walks well on the leash and isn’t one to pull you down the street. Hondo has also been taught “sit” and we are working on other obedience skills. Hondo will need a family willing to continue his education and take him to a quality obedience school so that he can be the best dog he can. He is very food motivated and we use that in his training to motivate him. He is a smart dog and is responsive to training.

Hondo is a great medium sized dog that would do well in many family situations. If there are children in the home they should be over the age of 8years as Hondo is a young dog himself and will need a lot of focus and attention for the first while in his new home. He needs a family committed to training him well, giving him the exercise he needs and the love and devotion he craves. He will be a dog that makes you laugh daily and will be your best buddy forever. Do you have forever to spend with a funny little dog?

An adoption donation of $400 is required. This helps cover our costs for veterinary care including spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, heartworm test, deworming and whatever else the dog may require.
