My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

SKIPPER is a 6 year old chocolate neutered male who weighs 97 pounds (needs to lose at least 5 lbs). He is on medication for low thyroid, so that will help him lose weight. Skipper is a sweet, big guy who rode very well in the car. He pretty much ignored the dogs that he met at the shelter. Skipper knows "sit," does well in a crate, and walks well on a leash. He's approved for kids ages 10 and up.

Update (6/13): At home, his schedule goes something like this: Stretch and slide off the couch around 6am - he sleeps there every night. If it's a bathroom emergency and the human is not up, he will bark once from the living room. If that doesn't work, he will do a quick tour of the bedroom. Goes for a morning walk and shows off his great leash skills while wearing his EZ Walk Harness. Prance his big paws and drool a little for breakfast. Sit before the bowl is placed down. Eat. Gently take his thyroid medicine on a treat with PB. Take a big slobbery drink of water. Head back to the couch for a snooze until his second pee break before the human leaves for work. Back up on the couch to rest during the day. Stretch and slide off the couch when the human arrives home and wiggle his back end and nudge with his head. Repeat walk, eat, drink routine. Back up on the couch to rest for a while. See him on youtube here! http://youtu.be/9rLnVdygYEM

Update (6/09): Skipper continues to look for his forever home where he will be spoiled as he deserves! He gets along very well with the resident dog - an easy going yellow female. He has met several dogs and not had problems with them. This weekend he got to spend some time with an 8 month old puppy who he had to tell to stop bothering him. The puppy listened to his elder as he should. So Skip can live with other dogs if they are not super young and in your face, but he would be fine being an only dog. Skipper has also proven that he has the potential to be more than cat tolerating and be cat friendly. He loves to be loved. When you stop he throws his head back to tell you to keep going.

Update (5/21): Skipper continues to be a wonderful house guest. He's an easy going guy who doesn't require too much to be happy. He would love a family that would let him lounge on the couch, take him for walks, feed him yummy treats, love on him and tell him he's a good boy. Skipper really enjoys his walks around the neighborhood. In the backyard, he likes to sniff around, chew a few pieces of grass, and then lie down in the grass and watch the comings and goings of the neighbors. In the house, he mostly spends his time in two of the rooms but is allowed free roam of the house. In the morning, he wakes up, goes for his walk, eats and gets back on the couch. The evening routine is pretty much the same.

He can be a little shy at first when visitors come over. He will sometimes sit when new people first come in, but after a few minutes he enjoys sitting next to them and bringing them his toys. Skipper is potentially cat-friendly. He met his foster mom's cat and barked at first but then showed little interest in the cat. He travels well in the car.

The leg he had surgery on does not seem to bother him like it did when he first came in to LR. Back then, you couldn't even touch the leg. Now, when he is sleeping on the sofa, he doesn't mind if I touch it gently - still being very smart about it. His gait is a little off because of the ACL injury, but it doesn't stop him from walking and even trotting. Every once in a while he will even run around a little outside. Skipper really is a great guy!

Update (4/07): Skipper loves hanging out with his foster. After some rehab, his gait is much stronger, and he walks using all 4 legs. Skipper loves going for a walk and gets excited when he sees his leash. He is 100% house trained and loves laying on the couch. He will let his foster know that he needs to go out with a quick bark. Skipper found the toy basket the other night and started taking them out, but didn't go crazy with them. He gets along with other dogs in the house but would be happy to soak up the attention by himself too. Skipper is looking for a quieter house with someone that would like to go for walks and give love. He can still be sensitive about his leg, but will fold himself almost in half to get some love.

Update (3/19): Skipper had a followup with the surgeon, and got a good report: He's where he needs to be, about 80-90% there. His injury was very old, so it could take him up to a year to build up all the muscle mass. He would benefit from the underwater treadmill once a week or some swimming, but mostly he needs to walk and continue getting stronger. Some limping is expected from time to time. This boy has come a long way and has been working hard to get where he is today. Now he needs a family that will continue with his care.

Update (1/23): Skipper is a six year old chocolate male who underwent ACL surgery. He continues to build muscle mass on that leg. He came to lab rescue as an overweight fellow, and had to lose some weight before his surgery. He walked into his new foster home today and settled in like he's lived here for years. He did lots of fun sniffing on the resident female lab. Skipper will continue rehabbing to build up those leg muscles by doing range of motion exercises, going on walks and maybe even going for a swim. Skipper loves to lean into his foster’s legs and look up lovingly. He is a gorgeous big chocolate boy with soulful eyes!
