Niko's Story...
Niko is a border collie or Australian Cattle Dog mix rescued from Rutherford County, North Carolina. Niko came to us with a leg that hadn't quite healed right after a bad break. But his sweet, smart pup deserves a new leash on life and we're happy to help. You can help, too - consider making a donation to our medical fund to help pay for Niko's surgery to fix his leg. Rural Dog Rescue saves the lives of dogs from high kill shelters in rural North Carolina and Virginia where strays can be euthanized in 72 hours and owner surrenders can be euthanized immediately if the shelters are full. All dogs go to their new homes spayed or neutered, up to date on all shots, wormed (although a 2nd worming may be required), started on heart worm and flea and tick preventative and microchipped.

Although we try to be as accurate as possible, Rural Dog Rescue cannot guarantee the breed or full-grown adult size of any of the dogs or puppies in its care. Because many of these dogs were found as strays or are the result of irresponsible, unplanned breeding, we do not know the dog's exact background and can only list breed and size by our best educated guess. If exact breed and size are important to you, please consider adopting a dog from a specific breed rescue - We want our dogs to be adopted by people who will love and care for them forever for who they are - no matter what breed and size they turn out to be!

Please contact to complete an application (applications do not commit you to the dog - it is used for the sole purpose of screening applicants) Adoption events are held every Saturday from 12 -3 at Howl To The Chief, 733 8th Street SE, Washington, DC (please note that not all dogs listed are at the adoption events).

Why Adoption is a Great Option

Niko, a Washington Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog dog was adopted! Here's how you can benefit by looking at adoption as an option to buying a Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog for sale in Washington, or seeking a Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog dog from a breeder in Washington.

  1. Rescues and shelter volunteers in Washington already know the personality and tendencies of their pets. This means they can match you with the right pet. That will makes it much easier transition to owning a pet for yourself and your new pet.
  2. On average adoption fees are much less than you'd pay a Washington breeder, or pet store. Plus most often rescue pets have already been to the veterinarian for a check-up, had a round of vaccinations, and are spayed or neutered. That is a lot of savings!
  3. You will become a hero, and give a needy dog or cat a loving home. In fact, there are even Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog breeders who help with Border Collie/Australian Cattle Dog rescue. One puppy or kitten adopted in Washington paves the way for another one to be saved.
