Here is what his foster family had to say:
Buddy has the nicest temperament anyone could wish for. He is very friendly, easy going, and he loves to be petted and snuggled. His complaints, when he has any, are mere whispers, which is quite unusual for a Beagle :) He is gentle, playful, loves to go for walks, but mostly he just wants to be in his people's company and get belly rubs.
He is not possessive of his toys and is very gentle when being hand fed. I gave him a treat which he ate on the floor while I was stepping around his face and not a peep. There are no other dogs in our home, but he met our neighbour's black Lab and they got on well. Very friendly. We left him alone for a couple of hours with our video camera running to see if he is distressed. Within minutes, he was lying down being a good boy. He never barked or cried and he did not touch anything in the house while we were gone. Found him curled up on the couch upon our return.
He is definitely a lap dog, but his size gets in the way :) Some weight loss should help him with this. He also likes to play fetch and go for walks. He is fine going on car rides, however, he must be restrained with a doggie seatbelt or a crate, as he spends half the time trying to come into the front seat and plop on someone's lap. He really loves being close to people! He is very calm and laid back but will gladly play fetch or go for a walk as many times as he is asked to do so. Very, very quiet. Big surprise for a Beagle! He doesn't shed much either.
Very well mannered, though, he does whimper softly the entire time someone is eating. He is not pushy, by any means, he just loves food! Due to his height, he can not reach any counters, but he does look for food when in the kitchen, at his own level. It would be best not to have any food within his reach. He is fully house trained. He goes and stands by the door, so we let him out. He stays in the crate at night. Not thrilled about it, but his initial complaints are minor and he quickly settles down. During the day and when he is alone in the house he is free to roam since he is pretty laid back and quiet on his own.
Buddy really likes to go for walks. He also likes to pull on the leash, but this is nothing a training harness can't fix. We'll work on it, but in the mean time, he is not for the frail among us :) if it were up to him, Buddy would travel at a fast trot everywhere he goes! He does try to follow people through doors. He's in no condition to bolt due to his size, but he may need extra watching going in and out once he slims down a bit.
Buddy is a people person and would love it if someone were home all day with him but he would do well in just about any environment where he was loved. If a backyard is not available, Buddy will need to have a regular walking schedule to help keep his weight in check. Also, he enjoys his walks a great deal :) Buddy likes to snuggle on the couch and be close to his people (or half way on them - definitely a lap dog), so, his adoptive family should be one that enjoys closeness with their pets.
Buddy is an easy going, sweet, sweet boy who asks for very little: snuggles, belly rubs and a walk or two a day. He is very well mannered, in spite of knowing very little, if anything, in terms of commands. He gives the gentlest kisses and his tail rarely stops wagging. A very sweet boy!
