My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Adopted 12/21/123!!!

11/24/13 Update - Almost Home!!!
Ranger is currently completing his heartworm treatment and his bad leg continues to get stronger. He will be heading home in a few more weeks. Ranger will have a fenced yard, swimming and beaches, a dog-friendly village to meet and greet dogs and people, a work-from-home Mom, and an extended human family. We wish we could tell him he is about to begin a life he could not have dreamed of.

Sunshine extends a huge and heartfelt thank you to everyone who has donated to Ranger's care, financially or in person. His transformation from a frightened dog tossed from a car in great pain, to the affectionate, pain-free, happy Golden that is Ranger today is due to all of your efforts. To those who donated their allowance money or more; to the surgeons who saved his leg; to his regular vet and clinic staff who exercised him and sat with him so he would eat his dinner; and to those who simply followed his story and have learned what rescue is all about ….. thank you, thank you, thank you!

11/5 Update - Volunteer, Lisa, brought Ranger back to the Mobile vet clinic today and they were amazed!!! Ranger is using the leg he previously could not stand on! He can put weight on it and use it to balance, and he can even walk on it. The muscle tone is returning and the surgeon expects him to regain full use of his leg. Our hearts are bursting -- and so is Ranger's! He was so happy to see the people he knows at the vet clinic. Now that he is moving more freely, he acts younger and may be younger than 8 years old, as we first thought. His teeth are good and he looks younger as he gains much-needed weight. He is very much a people dog, loving attention and brushing. We have noticed that he does not like to eat while alone. He wants a person nearby and then he eats contentedly. If all alone, food isn't very important. The next step is for Ranger to be neutered and to begin heartworm treatment. He will be spending time in a foster home, during some of his treatment, and we will learn more about Ranger in a home environment.

Ranger's medical costs are still accumulating and they are very high. If you have considered contributing to his care, a donation in any amount would be SO appreciated. Please consider donating to this very deserving fellow's medical care. Thank you.

10/30 Update - Ranger has had hip surgery! His surgery was last week and he will remain at the Surgeon's clinic in Birmingham for another week. He is putting weight on his leg, and is getting frequent visits from caring volunteers. We have been on edge because irregularities were seen during surgery and a pathology report was needed. Today we received the best news…there is no cancer! The report concluded that Ranger had a deep infection from an old injury, leading the surgeon to believe that Ranger had been in pain for a very long time. That is all behind him now.

Ranger will return to the Mobile area next week, to the vet clinic where the staff knows and loves him. He will receive heartworm treatment and have physical therapy. When he is ready, he will stay with the loving foster family who helps our most needy dogs prepare for their forever homes.

If you are following Ranger's story, you will enjoy reading that everyone remarks about his handsome demeanor, with his coat getting more shiny and his eyes brighter as his health improves. It has been mentioned that he probably was used as a breeder dog because he is such a gorgeous Golden, about 8 years old and just about perfect in every way except his bad leg and hip.

Please check back for updates on Ranger's progress. He still has a road to travel and he deserves the very best that a dog can have in this world.

9/30 Update: After a a few days at the vet clinic, Ranger has so many admirers! Everyone who meets him falls in love with him. He has had a bath and loves to be brushed. With his big Golden block head and his nice coat that will improve with a good diet, he is becoming a very handsome Golden. He is feeling so much better. With pain meds he moves more easily. He remains unable to use one back leg and x-rays have shown that he has displasia in both hips. We will be consulting with an Orthopedic Surgeon in the next few days to determine a plan for Ranger going forward. We cannot express enough, our sincere gratitude to everyone who has given to Ranger's care. He has a long road ahead of him but his life is already improving.

We will post more pictures of Ranger soon. Your donations for Ranger, no matter how small, are still very much needed and appreciated.

Original Bio: Ranger is about 7 years old and a purebred Golden who has known far more than his share of misfortune in his life. A Good Samaritan witnessed someone throw Ranger from their car on a busy road. Her view was blocked so she was not sure if Ranger had been hit by a car, but she noticed he did not put weight on one hind leg. She opened her car door to check on him, and he jumped right in. She took him to safety at a nearby shelter. Sunshine was called after Ranger was held the required week, without vet care. Our volunteer rushed to get him and what she found was even more sad. Ranger's hind leg has no muscle tone, so we are not sure if his injury is recent, or an old injury. He is a big Golden boy but he is painfully thin, and so matted he may need to be shaved. It is no surprise, of course, that Ranger is also heartworm positive so must get through heartworm treatment when we can get him healthy enough for treatment.

In spite of all that he has obviously endured, Ranger could not be sweeter. He has already started his road to recovery with good quality food, pain medicine, and lots of petting and affection to help him feel better. We are determined to help Ranger recover and then find him a home where he will know nothing but love, good care and kindness.

We will update Ranger's information as we learn more about his injury and his medical needs. We already know that his care will be lengthy and expensive. If you can help Ranger by contributing any amount toward his care, it would be greatly appreciated! Small donations add up when enough caring people pull together, and Ranger desperately needs and deserves our help.

About Our Rescue

Before being approved to adopt, all potential adopters need to complete our online application and participate in our pre-adoption review process. The process includes the completion of an online application, a reference from the applicants' vet, a phone interview, and a visit to the applicants' home. The application process helps us determine what type of Golden would be best suited for the applicants' life style. In some cases, the specific dog you are interested in may have found a home before this process is complete or further assessment may find that this dog is not the right match for your family. We are regularly getting new Goldens in need of a home, so we encourage you to apply and get approved so that when the right dog comes along you will be ready.

A contract is signed the day of adoption. Under the terms of the contract, all adopters are required to bring the rescue to a vet within 7 business days. The dogs receive basic veterinary care prior to adoption. If your vet identifies an illness that an adopter is not willing to treat, then the dog is returned and a full refund is provided.

The information provided on each dog is based on observations of our vets, volunteers, fosters and when available, trainers. While we do our best to report any and all issues, SGRR does not make any guarantees as to the health or temperament of any dog. Dogs evolve differently in different environments and we cannot predict with any certainty how the dog you adopt will act in your home.

Many of our dogs are fostered in private homes and we do not have a facility to visit. We are committed to our dogs before, during, and after adoption! The rescue retains title to the dog and can never be released or sold. Should the adopters no longer be able to keep the dog, SGRR must be notified so that we can take the dog back into rescue and place it into another home. We reserve the right to remove a dog at any time should we find the adopter is no longer caring for their Golden in a way we see fit. Adopters then have to agree to follow up visits as needed.

Be a ray of light for this Sunshine dog - make a tax deductible donation toward medical and other expenses. Every cent of your generosity goes directly toward the care of a Sunshine dog.
