My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

April is a sweet girl with a gentle nature and wears her heart on her sleeve. She was obviously someone's pet at one time and is a sensitive, affectionate companion. She is great with children but would do best in a relaxed home with lots of love to go around. April is approximately 1 1/2 to 2 years old and weighs 65 lbs (she is overweight).

Here is what her foster family had to say:

April is a total sweetheart. She is so happy to just be around people, giving tons of kisses. She is a little shy in general especially with men, however she has really come around. Her reactions are always fearful, never aggressive. All she needs is love and a comforting touch. April loves hugs and kisses, she is so sweet natured. She is happy just to be around people.

She is great with kids. She would need time to adjust to a family with little children as loud noises and fast movements cause her to cower but she warms up right away. She hasn't had a problem yet with a woman, however she is a bit fearful of men. She came around after a couple days with my husband as I'm sure she would with any other man willing to give her time to adjust to him.

She loves having a dog friend to hang out with while we are away. She is fine with our cat, she hasn't built up the courage to get too close but has shown no sign of aggression to the cat at all. She's aware of other dogs when we go for walks but makes no attempts to make contact which is exactly what you want. We have been leaving her home with our dog and have not had any issues. However, when left by herself uncrated she did chew a few things. She is fine in the crate if she had to be left alone.

We live on a very busy road. She is adjusting well to the traffic when we walk however transport trucks tend to send her cowering in the ditch. But, frankly we live in the country, there are no sidewalks and people drive way too fast. It makes me uneasy, I don't really blame her for being scared.

I would say she is a moderate energy level. She is a little overweight and slow on walks but is getting much better. She is low shedding. I have hardly even noticed having a extra dog in the house in that regard. She is very quitet. She'll whine to go outside and come back in. If we don't hear her whine outside she'll give a little bark but other then that she barely makes a peep. She is a little over weight but very healthy otherwise, great teeth and coat. Her sutures from her spay in July are still healing. She seems wise for her years but she still plays like a puppy.

She is great on a leash, never pulls. She has learned "stay" in the little time she has been with us. She knows "come" but needs some work on "sit" & "lay down". She is coming along very nicely with all of her house manners. I'd say she is pretty much house trained, she is able to go all night without incident. She will not go while you are there but left alone outside she'll do her business. For this reason a home with a fenced backyard would be great for her. We haven't used the crate too much. She does go in it on her own to lay down. She doesn't love being put in the crate but is fine once in.

April would be a great addition to anyone's home. She is so loving and sweet. She does need some training work but nothing a good stable home and owners wouldn't be able to handle. She is young enough that she can easily be trained to suit anyone's needs. Don't pass this girl up, she's a keeper.

If you would like to make April part of your family, please submit an application for consideration.
