My story

Here's what the humans have to say about me:

Toffee : 8 - 12 months old non-spayed female Chocolate Lab 54 lbs
(Lab Rescue will coordinate her spaying.)

I don’t know my real name but the nice people at Lab Rescue say I am as sweet as Toffee so that is my new name which I now know and will respond to when you call me. I belonged to someone because I was well fed with a beautiful chocolate coat and a collar when I wandered into a backyard where this nice family took care of me for a few days. They decided to call Lab Rescue as they had two Labs of their own. They really wanted to keep me but with two young Labs they knew that 3 dogs were more than they could handle with their busy lifestyle. They have two kids, ages 12 and 14 that I loved to cuddle and play with.

My current foster mom says I am very affectionate and love everyone I meet. I have a great time going to the dog park and playing with the other dogs. When I am home I like to be with my person and will follow them around. I love to run, swim and chase after the squeaky ball. I like to go for walks and I don't pull too much on the leash but I do go from side to side when I see new and exciting things so that I can go investigate. This can easily be corrected with a Martingale or Easy Walk Harness. Like most puppies, I will chew on inappropriate items but if you give me proper chew toys I will learn quickly. I jump on people because I get excited. These are puppy behaviors that are easily corrected. If you leave me alone, especially in the yard, I will bark but only because I want to be part of the family. I am house trained and have learned to use the dog door. I have a gentle mouth. You see, I am very cute and very smart!

Because I am a puppy, I am active and need a home (any kids should be 6 and older) that will take me out on a regular basis as I need lots of exercise - a tired dog is a GOOD DOG. I have learned to sit but will need someone who is committed to taking me to training classes as this will help to build a bond between us and help me to become a good canine citizen. I need someone to be home most of the time to provide the structure, leadership and guidance that a puppy needs. I am healthy, up to date on my vaccinations, heartworm negative and microchipped.

Update from the foster:
Toffee is a very smart dog and is learning quickly what is expected of her. She is very sweet, loving and affectionate and follows me wherever I go, not needing attention, but wanting to be with me. We continue to go for twice daily walks, swims in the lake and lots of running and playing at the dog park. When it is time to leave the dog park, she had good recall and comes right to me. When she has had enough exercise and we return home, she then settles nicely and takes a nap. Her favorite thing is her squeaky ball - she loves to chase it and bring it right back. A true retriever!

We are working on sit and stay so whoever adopts her will need to take her to obedience classes. This will establish a bond with her new owner and provide good socialization skills with other dogs. Because she is a puppy, she needs plenty of chew toys so that she doesn't find inappropriate items to chew on. She is doing much better when left alone and not barking as she is now reassured that I will be returning. Because she is a puppy and needs consistent leadership, we want someone to be around most of the time.

If you are home most of the time and are ready to put the time and energy into this great puppy, please call Rescue Rep Sandy @ (650) 303-2436.

(Please keep in mind we are all volunteers, most of us work full time and we all have personal lives. I do call everyone back within 2-3 days so please be patient and I will be back in touch with you. When the dogs are in foster homes then it may take longer as we need to touch base with the fosters for updates on the dogs. We work very hard to make the right matches for the dogs and for the new owners. We get 3-5 dogs per week and we do not have a facility that we keep the dogs housed in. They are scattered all over the Bay Area.)
